Germany Document Verification for Indian Documents

Germany is the one large European country where an Indian apostille does not work. When India joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2005, Germany objected, so the Convention does not apply between the two countries. German missions also stopped legalizing Indian documents in 2000. What remains is Germany document verification, a check requested by a German authority through the German Consulate General in Mumbai.

Quick answer

How do I get my Indian document accepted in Germany? Usually the German office handling your case decides. Many accept original Indian documents with a certified German translation. If they doubt a document, they can request Germany document verification through the German Embassy network in India. Only German authorities and courts can start this. Private persons cannot apply, and the current fee is INR 45,000 per application.

Why Germany does not accept Indian apostilles

The Apostille Convention lets any member object to a new country joining. Germany did so when India acceded. As a result, an MEA apostille has no legal effect in Germany, even though the same apostille works in Austria, France or Italy.

Germany also does not legalize Indian documents at its embassy or consulates. So the usual fallback for non-Apostille countries, MEA attestation plus embassy stamp, is not available either.

How Germany document verification works

The German Foreign Office describes verification as administrative assistance. A German authority, such as a registry office, foreigners' office or court, sends the request through official channels. The German Consulate General in Mumbai then has the document checked in India by service providers. Consular officials assess the findings and send a statement, with the original documents, back to the requesting authority.

The statement is a decision aid. The German authority still decides for itself whether to accept the document.

Who starts it and who pays

You cannot book a verification yourself. The fee is INR 45,000 per application, however many documents it covers, according to the German Embassy. The requesting authority pays the Consulate General and may then charge the cost to you.

For a verification, the authority sends originals plus two unstapled copies, passport copies and photos, full Indian addresses, a cost declaration and a data protection declaration.

What INFINITYGRO can and cannot do for Germany

We cannot apply for verification or speed it up. Nobody outside the German authority system can. What we can do is help you prepare documents that are complete and consistent, so a German office has fewer reasons to doubt them.

  • Collect fresh certified copies from the issuing body where needed
  • Arrange a German translation through our translation service, where the German office accepts one made in India
  • Check that names and dates match across passport, birth record and degree

Students, skilled workers and families

For university admission and work visas, German bodies often rely on other checks. Universities may use uni-assist or their own admission review. Skilled-worker cases often involve recognition of qualifications by a German body. These processes have their own document rules, which you should follow exactly.

Civil status cases, such as marriage in Germany or registering a child's birth, are where registry offices most often request verification.

Export and company papers for Germany

Most trade with Germany runs without legalized documents. EU customs rules and the commercial contract decide what papers travel with the goods. When a German bank, court or notary needs an Indian company document, they will tell you whether a translation, a notarised copy or a verification is required. See our commercial documents page for the Indian side.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Paying for an MEA apostille for Germany. It will not be recognised.
  • Asking an agent for German Embassy legalization. It is no longer offered.
  • Sending your only original abroad without keeping certified copies.
  • Applying for verification yourself, which the German mission will not accept.

Next steps

Ask the German office for its written list of required documents and whether it plans a verification. Then contact us if you need certified copies, translation or help collecting records from Indian authorities. We quote per document in writing before you send anything.
