Austria Apostille for Indian Documents

An Austria apostille is issued in India by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Austrian offices accept it without any further stamp from the Austrian Embassy. Austria has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since 1968, and the Convention has applied between India and Austria since India joined in 2005. The real work for most applicants lies in the German translation and the Austrian recognition rules that come after the apostille.

Quick answer

Do Indian documents for Austria need embassy attestation? No. Austria and India are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an Austria apostille from MEA completes the process in India. Before the MEA step, your document must be verified by the state department, a notary or SDM, or a Chamber of Commerce, depending on its type. Austrian offices often ask for a German translation of the apostilled document.

What Austrian offices actually look at

Austrian authorities check two things. First, that the document carries a valid apostille from the country that issued it. Second, that they can read it. A university, a residence permit office (Magistrat or Bezirkshauptmannschaft) or a registry office will usually ask for a German version alongside the original.

The apostille itself is a standard certificate attached by MEA. It confirms the signature of the Indian officer who verified your paper. It says nothing about the content, and Austrian officials know this. So they may still ask for further proof, such as syllabus details for a degree or a recent issue date for a civil record.

Austria apostille steps for an Indian document

  1. Pick the right first authority. Degrees and mark sheets go to the State Education or HRD department of the state where the university sits. Birth, marriage and police certificates go to the state Home or General Administration department, or through a notary and SDM where the state allows it. Company papers go to a Chamber of Commerce.
  2. MEA Apostille. MEA accepts documents only through its authorised outsourced centres, so an agency or the centre handles submission.
  3. Translation. Once the apostille is on, the translation is made of the whole document, including the apostille sticker.

The details of the MEA step are explained on our MEA apostille in India page.

Indian degrees and Austrian nostrification

Students and professionals often discover the word Nostrifizierung. This is the Austrian procedure through which a university checks whether a foreign degree matches an Austrian one. Not every case needs it. Admission to a master's programme, for example, is usually decided by the university itself without full nostrification.

Either way, the university expects authentic Indian papers. An apostilled degree and transcript are the normal starting point. Our degree certificate apostille page covers the education department step in each state.

German translation and court-certified translators

Austria keeps a list of court-certified translators (allgemein beeidete und gerichtlich zertifizierte Dolmetscher). Many offices prefer a translation by one of them. Some universities accept English documents for admission. Registry offices and courts usually want German.

INFINITYGRO can arrange a certified German translation in India. Check with the receiving office first whether it needs an Austrian court-certified translator, in which case the translation is best done there after the apostille. See our translation services.

Marriage, birth and police records

Spouses joining a partner in Austria, and people marrying there, usually need a birth certificate, a marriage certificate or a single status document, plus a police clearance. Austrian registry offices can be strict about the age of civil documents and may want recently issued copies. Ask before you apostille an old certificate.

The marriage certificate apostille guide explains which state departments verify civil records.

Exporters selling to Austria

Austria is an EU market, so customs paperwork follows EU rules. Legalized commercial documents come up mainly in tenders, distributor registration and company formalities. Typical papers are the certificate of incorporation, board resolution, power of attorney and certificate of origin. These go to a recognised Chamber of Commerce and then to MEA for the apostille.

What to send and what to avoid

  • Original documents, not laminated
  • Passport copy of the document holder
  • Name of the Austrian office and city, if known
  • For company papers, a covering letter on letterhead

Do not send Indian papers to the Austrian Embassy for legalization. It is not needed and causes delay. Courier your documents to our Delhi office; we return them by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.

Questions

Austria FAQs

Does the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi stamp Indian documents?

Normally no. Between India and Austria the MEA apostille replaces embassy legalization.

Is an Austria apostille the same as an apostille for Germany?

No. Germany does not accept Indian apostilles, while Austria does. The two countries follow different rules even though both use German.

Should the translation be done before or after the apostille?

After. The translator should translate the apostille certificate as well as the document.

Can I get an Austria apostille on a photocopy?

Usually only on an original or a properly certified copy accepted by the verifying department. A plain photocopy is not apostilled.

How much does the full process cost?

The MEA apostille fee is Rs 50 per document. State and translation charges vary, so INFINITYGRO quotes in writing per document before you send anything.
