Iran Embassy Attestation: Indian Documents for Iran
Iran embassy attestation follows the classic legalization chain, because Iran is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. An Indian document is verified in India, attested by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and then legalized by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi. Persian translation is usually the last piece.

Documents from India for Iran
How do I legalize an Indian document for Iran? Iran embassy attestation has three stages. First, verification in India by the state education or home department, a notary and SDM, or a Chamber of Commerce for trade papers. Second, MEA attestation, which is the normal stamp, not the Apostille. Third, legalization at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi. Most Iranian offices then want a Persian translation.
Iranian Students Who Studied in India
A large share of our Iran files come from Iranian nationals who studied in India. Universities in Pune, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hyderabad and elsewhere have long taken Iranian students. When they finish, their Indian degree must be legalized before Iran's education authorities will evaluate it.
The degree, transcripts and sometimes a migration or provisional certificate go through the state education department, the MEA and the Iranian Embassy. If you have already gone home, a friend or relative in India can send the papers to us. See our degree certificate page for the Indian side.

Degree Evaluation After You Return
Legalization in India is only half the job for graduates. Back in Iran, the education authorities evaluate the foreign degree and decide its equivalence. They look at the university's recognition, the course length and the full transcript. Missing papers at that stage are hard to fix from Iran.
Before leaving India, collect every original you might need: the degree, all mark sheets or the consolidated transcript, the provisional certificate if the final degree is late, and any letter on the medium of instruction. Have them all legalized at once. It costs less in courier and time than sending them back from Tehran later.
Iran Embassy Attestation Route
- Verify in India. Degrees go to the state that issued them. Personal papers go to the state home department or a notary and SDM. Commercial papers go to a Chamber of Commerce.
- MEA attestation. The MEA stamps the back of the paper. Iran does not take the Apostille, so do not ask for one.
- Iranian Embassy. The embassy in New Delhi legalizes the MEA stamp.
- Persian translation, usually done by an official translator in Iran.
More on the general process is on our embassy attestation page.
Rice, Tea and Other Exports to Iran
Iran is a long-standing buyer of Indian basmati rice, tea, sugar, pharmaceuticals and other goods. Iranian buyers and their banks may want legalized commercial invoices, certificates of origin and company documents. These start at a recognised Chamber of Commerce, then the MEA and the embassy. Embassy fees for commercial papers are often higher than for personal ones.
Payment and banking arrangements for Iran trade carry their own rules, and exporters should follow their bank's guidance. Our role is limited to legalizing the papers. See commercial documents and certificate of origin.
Persian Translation
Iranian offices work in Persian. After legalization, documents are normally translated by an official translator in Iran, whose translation is accepted by courts and ministries there. Some cases accept a translation from India. If yours does, we can arrange it through our translation service.
Marriage and Birth Records
Mixed Indian and Iranian families need legalized marriage and birth certificates for residence, citizenship or school matters. A registered marriage certificate is the clearest choice. These papers go through the state home department or a notary and SDM before the MEA.
What Goes Wrong
- Getting an Apostille. Iran needs MEA attestation and the embassy stamp.
- Missing transcripts, when the Iranian ministry wanted the full academic record.
- A name written differently on the passport and the degree, which is common with Persian names in Latin script.
- Laminated certificates.
