Algeria Apostille for Indian Documents: The New Route After July 2026

An Algeria apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs is now the last step for most Indian documents headed to Algeria. The Apostille Convention entered into force for Algeria on 9 July 2026, so the old embassy legalization stage has dropped away. INFINITYGRO prepares papers from anywhere in India for this shorter route.

Quick answer

Do Indian documents for Algeria still need embassy legalization? For documents apostilled after 9 July 2026, no. Algeria is now a party to the Apostille Convention, and India is a party too. Your document is first verified by the right Indian authority, then MEA issues an Algeria apostille. No visit to the Algerian Embassy in New Delhi is needed for that document. A French or Arabic translation may still be asked for.

What changed for Algeria in 2026

Until mid 2026, Indian papers for Algeria followed the long embassy chain: Indian verification, MEA attestation, then legalization at the Algerian Embassy in New Delhi. Algeria then joined the Apostille Convention, and it entered into force for Algeria on 9 July 2026.

Since India and Algeria are now both parties, one MEA apostille is enough on the Indian side. Papers legalized under the old system before that date usually stay valid as they are. If an Algerian office has an old checklist that still mentions embassy stamps, show them the apostille and point to the HCCH status table.

Who sends Indian documents to Algeria

Most requests come from three groups:

  • Workers and engineers joining projects in Algeria who need degree and experience papers accepted.
  • Families who need birth or marriage records for residence or civil registration.
  • Exporters, often in pharmaceuticals, food and engineering goods, who register with Algerian importers or tender bodies.

Each group uses a different first step in India, but all of them end with the same MEA stamp.

Step by step: getting an Algeria apostille in India

  1. Educational papers. The state education department or the issuing university verifies the degree or marksheet. See our degree certificate apostille page.
  2. Personal papers. Birth, marriage and police certificates are verified by the state Home or General Administration department, or by a notary and SDM where the state allows it.
  3. Commercial papers. A recognised Chamber of Commerce authenticates invoices, certificates of origin and company records.
  4. MEA apostille. The CPV Division adds the apostille through its authorised outsourced centre. MEA checks the signature of the verifying officer, not the content.

The paper then goes straight to Algeria. For more on the MEA side, read MEA apostille in India.

Arabic and French translation

Arabic is Algeria's official language, and French is still widely used in administration and business. Many Algerian offices will want a translation of an English document. Ask your receiving office which language they prefer and whether they need the translation done inside Algeria.

If they accept a translation made in India, INFINITYGRO can arrange certified Arabic or French translation. Plan the order with them first, since some offices want the apostille translated too.

Commercial papers for the Algerian market

Algerian buyers and regulators often ask for a company registration document, a certificate of origin, free sale or GMP certificates for pharma, and invoices that match the shipment. The chamber step comes first, then MEA. Our commercial documents page explains the chamber process in detail.

Keep the consignee name, invoice number and product description identical on every paper. A mismatch is the most common reason a chamber or buyer sends a set back.

Pharmaceutical exporters should check which Algerian ministry receives the registration file, since health products follow their own rules. Food exporters may need health or phytosanitary certificates issued by the relevant Indian authority. Each certificate keeps its original issuer, and the chamber or that authority's verification comes before MEA. When a buyer sends a list, we match each item to the right first step so nothing returns from MEA for a missing stamp.

What to send INFINITYGRO

  • The original document, not laminated
  • A clear scan on WhatsApp first so we can confirm the route
  • Passport copy of the holder for personal and educational papers
  • Company letterhead copies signed by the authorised signatory for business papers
  • A note of the Algerian office that will receive the document

Courier the set to our New Ashok Nagar office in Delhi, or drop it off if you are in Delhi NCR. We return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Paying for Algerian Embassy legalization on a paper that only needs an apostille now.
  • Sending a photocopy where the Algerian office wants the original apostilled.
  • Getting the translation done before the apostille when the office wants the apostille translated as well.
  • Assuming an Algeria apostille also covers a third country. It is valid in every Apostille member state, but each destination may have its own translation and recognition rules.
