Brazil Apostille for Indian Documents: The Full Route

Since August 2016 a Brazil apostille from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is all an Indian document needs before it goes to Brazil. Before that date, Indian papers had to be legalized by the Brazilian Embassy. Many older guides still describe the embassy step, so it helps to know the rule changed.

Quick answer

Does Brazil accept the Indian MEA apostille? Yes. Brazil joined the Hague Apostille Convention with effect from 14 August 2016, so a Brazil apostille issued by MEA is accepted without consular legalization. In Brazil, the document is then usually translated into Portuguese by a sworn public translator (tradutor público juramentado) before it is filed with a university, registry or government office.

What changed for Brazil in 2016

Brazil was a non-Apostille country for many years. Indian documents went through MEA attestation and then to the Brazilian mission in New Delhi. When the Convention came into force for Brazil on 14 August 2016, that consular step ended for documents covered by the Convention.

If an agent still asks you for Brazilian Embassy legalization, ask why. In most cases it is a leftover from the old system.

The Brazil apostille route, step by step

  1. State or Chamber verification. Educational papers go to the state education department. Civil records go to the state Home or GAD department, or a notary and SDM where accepted. Company documents go to a Chamber of Commerce.
  2. MEA Apostille. Submitted through an MEA authorised centre. MEA checks the signature of the verifying officer.
  3. Courier to Brazil. The original with the apostille travels to the applicant or the Brazilian company.

Read more on how MEA apostille works.

Each document gets its own apostille certificate. A degree, a transcript and a birth certificate are three separate apostilles, each with its own number.

Portuguese and the sworn translator

Brazilian offices work in Portuguese. The usual standard is a translation by a tradutor público juramentado, a translator registered with a Brazilian state commercial board. These translators work in Brazil, so the translation is normally done after the document arrives.

If you need a Portuguese or Spanish working copy in India, for example to share with an employer early, INFINITYGRO can arrange one through our translation service. Confirm with the Brazilian side which version they will file.

Degrees and revalidation in Brazil

A foreign degree does not automatically carry professional rights in Brazil. Brazilian public universities run revalidation (revalidação) for undergraduate degrees and recognition (reconhecimento) for postgraduate degrees. They ask for apostilled diplomas and transcripts, and often the syllabus too.

Get the transcript apostilled along with the degree. The degree certificate apostille page explains the state education step.

Work permits and family moves

Indian professionals posted to Brazil, and the spouses and children who join them, usually present a mix of papers. Common ones are degree certificates for the work authorisation, a police clearance, birth certificates for children and a marriage certificate for the spouse.

The Brazilian employer or its immigration lawyer normally sends a checklist. Follow that list closely. Brazilian offices can reject a file because one supporting record is missing the apostille, even when everything else is in order. It is easier to apostille all the family's civil records in one batch than to send a second courier from India later.

Indian exporters and Brazilian buyers

Brazil buys a wide range of goods from India, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles and engineering products. Importers and regulators may ask for apostilled company papers, registration certificates, free sale certificates and powers of attorney appointing a local representative.

These start at a Chamber of Commerce. Our commercial documents page lists what each chamber handles.

Mistakes that slow Brazilian files

  • Spelling differences between passport and certificate, which Brazilian registries notice
  • Apostilling the degree but not the transcript
  • Translating in India when the Brazilian office wanted a sworn translator
  • Sending laminated originals that cannot take a stamp
