Colombia Apostille for Documents Issued in India
For papers going to Bogota, Medellin or Cali, a Colombia apostille issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs is the last stamp you need from India. Colombia and India are both Apostille Convention parties, so the Colombian embassy plays no role in legalizing the document.

Documents from India for Colombia
What does Colombia need on an Indian document? Colombia needs the MEA apostille and, in most cases, a Spanish translation by an official translator. Get the document verified by the right Indian authority first, then obtain the Colombia apostille from MEA. Translate after the apostille so the translator covers both the certificate and the apostille page. No embassy legalization is needed.
Translation is the step people miss
The apostille is only half the job for Colombia. Colombian authorities work in Spanish and generally expect an official translation, meaning one made by a translator officially recognised in Colombia. A casual translation, even if notarised in India, may be rejected.
Talk to the Colombian office or your lawyer there before deciding where to translate. If they accept a translation done in India, we can arrange it through our translation service. If they insist on a Colombian official translator, we send you the apostilled original and you translate on arrival.
Build the translation time into your plan. It is often the slowest part of the whole job, and you cannot start it until the apostilled original is back with you.

Colombia apostille steps in India
- Verification. State education department for degrees; state Home or GAD office, or SDM in Delhi, for birth, marriage and police certificates; a Chamber of Commerce for company papers.
- Notarisation for affidavits, declarations and powers of attorney.
- MEA apostille through an authorised MEA centre.
- Translation into Spanish, in India or in Colombia.
Visas, study and family matters
Colombian visa and residence files often call for proof of studies, marital status or a clean record. Typical Indian papers are a degree certificate, a marriage certificate and a police clearance certificate. Police certificates are often valid for a limited period in the receiving country, so time the application carefully.
Exporting from India to Colombia
Indian pharmaceutical, automotive, textile and chemical exporters supply the Colombian market. When a Colombian importer registers a product or appoints a distributor, it may ask for apostilled copies of the certificate of incorporation, a power of attorney, a free sale certificate or a GMP certificate.
Commercial papers pass through a Chamber of Commerce and then MEA. Read our commercial documents page for how we prepare them.
Colombia apostille checklist by document type
Education
Degree certificate, transcripts and mark sheets. Verified by the education department of the state where the university sits. For postgraduate admission or professional registration in Colombia, the receiving body may want transcripts as well as the degree.
Civil records
Birth, marriage, divorce and single status papers. Verified by the state Home or GAD office, or by the SDM in Delhi. Affidavits are notarised first.
Company papers
Certificate of incorporation, board resolution, power of attorney, free sale and GMP certificates. Authenticated by a Chamber of Commerce. Copies must be signed by an authorised signatory.
All three groups end with the same Colombia apostille from MEA.
Mistakes that cause rework
- Translating before the apostille, so the apostille page is left untranslated.
- Spelling a name differently in the passport, certificate and translation.
- Sending a laminated degree, which cannot be stamped.
- Asking the Colombian embassy to legalize an apostilled paper. That step does not exist for Colombia.

Colombia FAQs
Is Colombia an Apostille country for India?
Yes. Both are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the MEA apostille is accepted in Colombia.
Can my translation be done in India?
Some Colombian offices accept it and some want a translator officially recognised in Colombia. Confirm with the receiving office first.
Do I need to apostille both the original and the translation?
Normally the original is apostilled in India. The translation is then attached. Your Colombian office will say if it needs anything more.
How long is a police certificate valid in Colombia?
That depends on the Colombian authority. Ask them, and get the certificate close to your application date.
Can a company power of attorney be apostilled?
Yes. It is signed on letterhead, notarised, authenticated by a Chamber of Commerce if needed, and then apostilled by MEA.
What if a Colombian office asks for consular legalization?
Show them the MEA apostille. Colombia is a Convention party, so the apostille replaces consular legalization for Indian public documents.
