Costa Rica Apostille: Using Indian Documents in Costa Rica
Costa Rica accepts the apostille issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs, so a Costa Rica apostille is the last step your document needs in India. The Convention has applied to Costa Rica since December 2011. What usually takes more planning is the Spanish translation and the residency paperwork on the Costa Rican side.

Documents from India for Costa Rica
What is needed to use an Indian document in Costa Rica? First the document is verified in India by the state department, a notary or SDM, or a Chamber of Commerce. Then MEA adds the Costa Rica apostille. No Costa Rican consular stamp is needed. In Costa Rica the document is normally translated into Spanish by an official translator before it is filed with immigration, a registry or a university.
Who sends Indian papers to Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a smaller destination for Indians than Europe or the Gulf. The typical cases are people applying for residency, couples marrying there, professionals moving with a company and families of residents. Exporters dealing with Central American distributors also need company papers from time to time.

Residency files and civil records
Costa Rican immigration normally asks for a birth certificate and a police clearance from the country of origin, plus marriage proof for dependants. Recent issue dates matter here. Plan the order so the police certificate is fresh when it reaches Costa Rica.

Costa Rica apostille process in India
- Collect the original document, not laminated.
- Verification by the state Home or Education department, or a notary and SDM, or a Chamber for business papers.
- Submission to MEA through an authorised centre for the apostille.
- Return courier to you or direct dispatch to your contact abroad.
The apostille confirms the signature and seal of the Indian officer who verified the paper. It does not certify the content, and it carries a unique number the receiving office can check with MEA. More on this in our MEA apostille guide.
Getting married in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a popular wedding destination. A foreign partner marrying there is usually asked for a birth certificate and proof of being free to marry, such as a single status certificate or a divorce decree. A Costa Rican lawyer or notary normally handles the ceremony paperwork and tells you which records to bring.
If you later need the Costa Rican marriage recognised in India, that document goes through Costa Rica's own apostille system, not MEA. Our marriage certificate apostille page covers the Indian side.
Spanish translation for Costa Rica
Costa Rican offices work in Spanish. They generally expect a translation by an official translator recognised in Costa Rica, so the final translation is often done there. Ask your lawyer or the receiving office which translators they accept.
INFINITYGRO can arrange a Spanish translation in India where the receiving side accepts it. See our translation options.
Study and academic records
Indian students applying to Costa Rican universities, or doctors and nurses seeking to have training recognised, need apostilled degrees and transcripts. The state education department verifies these first. Universities may also ask for course descriptions, which are best requested from your Indian university at the same time.
Keep a scanned copy of every page after the apostille is attached. Overseas offices sometimes ask for a preview before the originals arrive.
Company documents for Central American trade
Distributors and lawyers in Costa Rica may want an apostilled certificate of incorporation, board resolution or power of attorney when you appoint a local agent or register products. These go through a recognised Chamber of Commerce before the MEA apostille.
Common pitfalls
- Police certificates that expire before the residency file is filed
- Names written differently on passport and birth record
- Sending papers to an embassy for legalization when MEA apostille is enough
- Translating before the apostille is attached
