Cyprus Apostille for Documents from India

Cyprus apostille cases are a mix of study, work, marriage and company business. Cyprus has been part of the Hague Apostille Convention for decades, and English is widely used in its offices. One Apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) makes an Indian document ready for use there.

Quick answer

How do I legalize an Indian certificate for Cyprus? Get the document verified at its Indian source: the state education or home department, a notary and SDM, or a Chamber of Commerce. Then the MEA issues the Cyprus apostille. No embassy stamp is needed. Many Cypriot offices accept English, but some ask for a Greek translation, so check with the office that will receive it.

An English-Friendly Destination

Cyprus is easier than most EU countries on language. Its legal system draws on English common law, and many offices accept documents in English. That often means no translation is needed. Still, some offices want Greek, so it is worth asking before you travel.

For an Indian paper, this makes Cyprus one of the simplest EU destinations: one sticker from the MEA, and often no translator at all.

Who Needs a Cyprus Apostille

  • Students at private colleges and universities, who need apostilled school and degree papers.
  • Workers in hospitality, shipping and services, whose employers ask for qualifications and a police clearance.
  • Couples who marry in Cyprus. Municipalities there are a known venue for foreign couples. They ask for birth certificates and proof that each person is free to marry.
  • Companies forming a Cyprus entity or appointing directors, who need apostilled company papers.

Cyprus Apostille Steps from India

  1. Get the original or a fresh certified copy.
  2. Verify it at the source in India.
  3. Submit to the MEA for the Apostille. We do this through the authorised channel.
  4. Receive it by tracked courier.

Our MEA Apostille guide has more on the process.

A residence or work permit in Cyprus often needs a police clearance certificate. Get a fresh one from Passport Seva shortly before you apply, because offices there may only accept recent ones. It goes straight to the MEA for the Apostille. See our PCC page.

Getting Married in Cyprus

Couples marrying in Cyprus usually need an apostilled birth certificate and a document showing they are single. In India this is often a single status affidavit or a certificate from the registrar, signed before a notary and then sent through the chain. Divorced or widowed applicants need the decree or death certificate too. The municipality sets the list, and it can change, so get it in writing.

After the wedding, the Cypriot marriage certificate can be used in India. See our marriage certificate page for the Indian side.

Company and Director Documents

Indian businesses use Cyprus companies for trade and holding structures. Registration offices and banks there may want an apostilled certificate of incorporation, memorandum, articles and a board resolution. These are notarised, certified by a Chamber of Commerce and apostilled. See our commercial documents service.

Banks in Cyprus also run their own know-your-customer checks on directors and shareholders. They may ask for an apostilled passport copy or address proof, certified by a notary in India first.

When Greek Translation Is Needed

Courts and some government departments work in Greek. If yours does, ask whether the translation must be done in Cyprus. If a translation from India is accepted, we arrange it through our translation service.

Personal names should be transliterated the same way on every translated paper. Give the translator your passport so the spelling follows it.

Students and Work Rights

Cyprus has many private colleges that take international students, and Indian students make up a large group. Admission needs apostilled school and degree papers. Before you pay a college, check that it is registered and the course is accredited with the Cypriot education authorities, and read the rules on part-time work for students. A Cyprus apostille only proves the Indian signature on your certificate. It does not make a course or a job offer genuine.

Errors to Avoid

  • Sending a single status affidavit that is unsigned or not notarised.
  • Laminated certificates.
  • Different name spellings on passport and birth certificate.
