Denmark Apostille for Papers Issued in India
A Denmark apostille is issued in India by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and it is the only legalization step Danish authorities need for an Indian public document. Most people who ask us about Denmark are joining a spouse, taking up a job, or enrolling in a master's programme. Their papers are usually personal or educational, and the question is often whether an Apostille is wanted at all.

Documents from India for Denmark
Do Danish authorities need an Apostille on Indian documents? When a Danish authority asks for legalization, the Denmark apostille from MEA is the right certificate. Not every application needs it, so check the checklist of the office handling your case. If it is required, the paper is verified by the state department or notary first, then MEA adds the Apostille. No Danish Embassy step follows.
First Ask: Does Your Danish Case Need It?
Danish immigration and municipal offices publish document checklists for each case type. Some ask for apostilled marriage or birth certificates. Others accept a copy with the original shown later. Read the checklist or ask your caseworker before you spend money.
Where the checklist says "legalised" or "apostille", Indian papers need the MEA Apostille. Nothing more is required from India.

English or Danish?
Indian certificates are mostly in English, and many Danish offices read English documents without translation. If yours is in Hindi or another Indian language, or the office asks for Danish, a certified translation is needed. Our translation service can prepare English or Danish versions.
Translations should cover the whole certificate, including stamps and handwritten entries. If the office wants the Apostille sheet translated as well, tell us before we start so it is done in one go.
How a Denmark Apostille Is Obtained
- State verification: education department or notary and SDM for degrees; Home or General Administration department or SDM for marriage certificates and birth certificates.
- For company papers, notarisation where needed and a Chamber of Commerce stamp.
- MEA Apostille at an authorised centre in New Delhi.
Family Reunification Papers
Spouse cases usually rely on the marriage certificate issued by a registrar under the relevant marriage law. A religious ceremony record alone is weaker. If your marriage is not registered, register it first. Children joining a parent need birth certificates issued by the municipal or panchayat registrar.
Danish caseworkers may also compare the details on your marriage certificate with your passports and earlier visa records. Check that dates of birth and parents' names match before the paper goes for verification.
Indian Companies Dealing With Denmark
Danish buyers and banks may ask Indian suppliers for an apostilled certificate of incorporation, board resolution or commercial documents. These go through a Chamber of Commerce before MEA.
Keep company names, addresses and signatory names identical across every paper. A board resolution that names a director who has since resigned, or an invoice that shows a different consignee from the certificate of origin, is a common reason for rejection at the chamber. Danish banks opening accounts for Indian subsidiaries may also ask for apostilled constitutional documents such as the memorandum and articles.
Master's Students and Credential Checks
Danish universities assess foreign qualifications during admission. Many accept scanned transcripts at the application stage and check originals later. When an apostilled copy is requested, the degree certificate and mark sheets are verified at state level and then sent to MEA.
Students also apply for a residence permit after admission. That file may ask for proof of funds and a passport copy, not apostilled papers. Read your own checklist closely, because requirements differ between study, work and family schemes, and we would rather save you an unneeded Denmark apostille than add one.
Police Certificates and Name Changes
Some Danish employers or schemes ask for a police clearance certificate. The passport office PCC can go to MEA for a Denmark apostille after it is issued. See our PCC page for the difference between passport and state police certificates.
If your name changed after marriage, carry the gazette notification or a marriage certificate showing both names. Danish offices compare names closely, and a mismatch between passport, degree and marriage certificate can stall a file. Fix spellings at the issuing office before the Apostille, since MEA does not correct content.
An apostilled document can be used in other Apostille countries too, but each office decides what it accepts. Ask before reusing a paper.
