France Apostille on Indian Documents, Paired With a Sworn French Translation

A France apostille is the MEA certificate that makes an Indian public document acceptable to French offices without any embassy legalization. The Indian issuer's signature is first confirmed by a state department, notary and SDM or a Chamber of Commerce, and the Ministry of External Affairs then adds the Apostille. For France, the translation that follows is usually the part that needs most care.

Quick answer

Will a French office accept my apostilled Indian document in English? Usually not on its own. French town halls, prefectures and courts generally want a French translation made by a sworn translator (traducteur assermenté), who is registered with a French court of appeal. Get the France apostille in India first, then have the apostilled document translated so the Apostille is covered as well.

The Sworn Translator Requirement

France has a formal system of sworn translators. They are listed by the courts of appeal and their translations carry a stamp and signature that French offices recognise. A town hall preparing a marriage file, or a prefecture handling a residence permit, will often reject a translation that lacks this.

Some French consulates and translators in India can also provide translations accepted in France. Ask the office receiving your file which translators it accepts. If an Indian certified translation is acceptable, we can arrange French translation for you.

Marrying in France With Indian Papers

An Indian citizen marrying in France usually builds a file for the mairie. It commonly includes a recent copy of the birth certificate, proof of single status, and a certificate of custom issued by the Indian side. French town halls often want the birth certificate to be recently issued, so order a fresh copy before you start the Apostille.

The birth certificate goes through the state home or GAD department, then the MEA. See our birth certificate apostille page for the state step.

France Apostille Route in India

  1. Authenticate in India. Degrees go to the state education department. Civil documents go to the home or GAD department or through a notary and SDM. Company papers go to a recognised Chamber of Commerce.
  2. MEA Apostille. The MEA checks the authenticating signature and adds the sticker. It does not review content.
  3. Translate in French. Use a sworn translator if the French office requires one.

The French Embassy in New Delhi has no role in this chain.

Students and Skilled Workers

Students heading to French universities and schools need degrees and transcripts for admission, and sometimes for visa or residence steps after arrival. Employees moving on a talent or intra-company permit may be asked for degrees, experience letters and a police clearance certificate.

Many French institutions accept English-medium transcripts at admission without an Apostille. Prefectures and professional bodies are stricter. Ask before you spend on legalizing every paper. Our degree apostille page covers the Indian side.

Company Documents for French Partners

Indian companies opening a subsidiary or branch in France, or signing distribution agreements, may need apostilled corporate papers. Typical ones are the certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles, board resolution and power of attorney. Exporters may be asked for a certificate of origin or a free sale certificate.

Corporate documents go through a Chamber of Commerce before the MEA. Read commercial document attestation for the chamber step.

Residence Permits and Prefecture Appointments

After arrival, a prefecture may ask for civil documents again when you apply for or renew a residence permit, or when a family member joins you. Keep the apostilled originals and the sworn translations together in one folder. If you expect a spouse or children to follow later, it is usually cheaper to apostille their birth and marriage certificates while you are still in India than to send papers back from France.

Sending Your Documents

  • Original certificates, unlaminated
  • Passport copy
  • A fresh birth certificate copy if the file is for a French marriage

Where French Files Go Wrong

  • Translating before the Apostille, so the sticker is not translated
  • Using a translator the French office does not recognise
  • Old birth certificate copies that the mairie rejects
  • Asking the French Embassy for legalization that is not needed

Questions

France FAQs

Does France accept the Indian Apostille?

Yes. France and India are both parties to the Apostille Convention, so the France apostille from the MEA is the final Indian step.

Who should translate my documents into French?

French offices usually want a sworn translator. Check with the receiving office; we can arrange French translation where an Indian certified translation is accepted.

Can you apostille a birth certificate issued long ago?

Often yes, but a French town hall may want a recent copy. Ordering a fresh one first avoids a second Apostille.

Do company documents need a Chamber of Commerce stamp first?

Yes, for most commercial and corporate papers going to the MEA.

What does the MEA charge?

Rs 50 per Apostille. We quote our full total in writing before you courier documents.
