Norway Apostille for Indian Certificates

Indian professionals moving to Oslo, Bergen or Stavanger, and their families, often come across the term Norway apostille in their paperwork. It refers to the MEA apostille issued in New Delhi, which Norwegian authorities accept because both countries are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention. No Norwegian embassy step follows.

Quick answer

Do I need an apostille for Norway, or are copies enough? It depends on the Norwegian office. Immigration (UDI) and recognition bodies often work with copies and their own checks, while the tax office, civil registry, courts and banks may ask for apostilled originals. Where an apostille is needed, the document is verified in India and then MEA issues the Norway apostille. English documents often need no translation.

Start with the Norwegian office's own rules

Norway has several separate bodies that may look at your Indian papers. The immigration directorate handles residence permits. A recognition agency assesses foreign higher education. The tax administration runs the national population register, which records marriages and children. Courts and banks have their own rules.

Each publishes its own document requirements. Some want only copies and verify directly with the issuer. Others name the apostille. Find out which body is asking, then read its list before you send anything to us.

Registering marriage and children in Norway

When an Indian family settles in Norway, the population register often needs proof of marriage and of each child's birth. These are commonly the documents that need a Norway apostille. A marriage certificate and birth certificates are verified by the Home or GAD department of the issuing state, or by the SDM in Delhi, and then apostilled by MEA.

Make sure the child's birth certificate shows the full names of both parents, matching their passports. Norwegian registers can query certificates where a parent's name is missing or spelt differently.

Norway apostille route in India

  1. First verification: state education department for degrees, state Home or GAD office or SDM for civil records, a Chamber of Commerce for company papers.
  2. Notarisation for affidavits, declarations and powers of attorney.
  3. MEA apostille through an authorised centre.
  4. Tracked courier back to you or straight to your address abroad if you arrange it.

Degrees and professional registration

Health professionals such as doctors and nurses, and some engineers, need professional authorisation in Norway. The authorising body may ask for verified or apostilled degrees and transcripts, and sometimes a certificate of good standing from the Indian council. The apostille step for a degree goes through the state education department and then MEA.

Professional council certificates are a different case. Check whether the Norwegian body wants them sent directly from the council rather than through you.

Language and translation

Many Norwegian authorities accept documents in English, as well as Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. That means most Indian certificates need no translation at all. Documents in Hindi or a regional language usually need a translation into English or Norwegian by a qualified translator. We can arrange an English translation through our translation service after confirming it will be accepted.

Indian companies in the Norwegian market

Indian firms supplying the Norwegian maritime, energy or seafood processing industries, or registering a branch, may be asked for apostilled company documents. Typical papers are the certificate of incorporation, articles of association, a board resolution and a power of attorney. These go through a Chamber of Commerce before MEA. Our commercial documents page has more on the chamber step.

Timing your papers

We do not give fixed timelines, because state departments, chambers and MEA centres each have their own queues. For most Norway files the state verification of degrees or civil records is the slowest part. Company documents through a chamber are usually quicker.

If you are already in Norway and a relative in India is handling the originals, plan the courier both ways. Many clients have the finished papers returned to an Indian address and carry them on their next trip, which avoids international courier risk for originals.

Things that slow Norway files down

  • Apostilling documents the Norwegian body never asked for.
  • Birth certificates missing a parent's name.
  • Different name spellings across passport, degree and marriage certificate.
  • Expecting the Norwegian embassy to stamp apostilled papers.

Questions

Norway FAQs

Is the Norway apostille issued by the Norwegian embassy?

No. It is issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs. Norwegian authorities accept it under the Apostille Convention.

Does UDI always need apostilled documents?

Not always. UDI sets its own rules by permit type and nationality. Check its checklist for your case.

Do I need a Norwegian translation?

Often not. Many Norwegian offices accept English. Documents in Indian languages normally need translation.

Can a birth certificate issued long after birth be apostilled?

Yes, if it has been issued by the competent registrar. Some Norwegian offices may ask further questions about late registrations.

Can you post the finished documents to Norway?

We return documents by tracked courier. Tell us the address you want and we will quote the courier cost.

Can I use the same apostilled marriage certificate for Norway and later for another country?

Yes, for any Apostille country. Some offices keep the original, so consider getting a second certified copy from the registrar and apostilling both.
