Pakistan Apostille for Documents Issued in India
Pakistan apostille requests are mostly about family matters. Pakistan accepts the Apostille under the Hague Convention, and the HCCH status table records no objection from India, so a document apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is the expected route. Because these cases are often unusual, we confirm each one before you send anything.

Documents from India for Pakistan
Can an Indian document be apostilled for use in Pakistan? Yes. Pakistan accepts the Apostille under the Convention; we confirm each case. A Pakistan apostille is issued by the MEA after the document is verified by the state home department, a notary and SDM, or the state education department. The receiving office in Pakistan may have its own rules, so check with it before you start.
What These Cases Usually Involve
Requests for Pakistan are not like Gulf job files. They are usually family records: a birth or death certificate for an inheritance, a marriage certificate, an affidavit, or a power of attorney for property. Some are for court cases. Each one tends to have its own background.
That is why we do not quote blindly. Tell us what the document is and which office in Pakistan wants it. We then confirm the path in writing.

How the Pakistan Apostille Works
Both India and Pakistan are parties to the Apostille Convention. The HCCH status table lists Pakistan, and no objection by India is recorded against it. In practice this means an Indian public document with an MEA Apostille should be accepted in Pakistan without a consular stamp.
The Apostille only confirms the signature and seal of the Indian officer. It does not confirm what the document says. Our MEA Apostille guide explains this.
Steps in India
- Collect the original certificate, or a fresh certified copy from the registrar.
- Get it verified by the state home department, or by a notary and SDM where accepted.
- Submit to the MEA for the Apostille.
- We return it to you by tracked courier.
For powers of attorney, the document is signed before a notary first. See our birth certificate page for registrar copies.
Inheritance and Property Matters
Families split across the border sometimes need papers for land, bank accounts or inheritance on the other side. The usual set is a death certificate, a legal heir or succession certificate issued by an Indian court or revenue office, and a power of attorney so a relative can act for you.
Court-issued papers are public documents. They are certified by the court and then go to the state or the MEA as the state's practice requires. A power of attorney is a private document, so it is signed before a notary first. The wording must suit the law where it will be used. We suggest you have a lawyer in Pakistan check the draft before you sign it in India.
Educational and Other Records
Fewer clients send degrees to Pakistan, but it does happen, for example for a teaching or research post or for further study. A degree goes to the education department of the state that issued it and then to the MEA. Our degree certificate guide covers this path. Marriage certificates follow the personal document route.
Urdu Translation
Many Pakistani offices work in English. Courts or local offices may ask for Urdu. Ask the office first, and ask whether the translation should be done in India before the Pakistan apostille or in Pakistan after it. We can arrange certified translation when needed.
If the original is in Hindi or another Indian language, an English translation may help the receiving office too. A translation made in India can be notarised and apostilled as a separate document.
Points to Watch
- Names spelt differently across certificates are a common problem in old family records.
- Handwritten old certificates may need a fresh computer copy from the registrar.
- A power of attorney must name the attorney and the property clearly.
