Portugal Apostille for Documents Issued in India
Portugal has been an Apostille Convention member since 1969, so a Portugal apostille from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is all an Indian public document needs before it is used in Portugal. Portugal is also unusual among European destinations because of its historic link with Goa, Daman and Diu, which brings many families to Portuguese registries with Indian civil records.

Documents from India for Portugal
What does a Portugal apostille involve for Indian documents? Your document is first verified in India, by the state department for degrees and civil records or a Chamber of Commerce for business papers. MEA then attaches the Portugal apostille. No Portuguese Embassy legalization is needed. Portuguese offices generally want a Portuguese translation, and they may have rules on how that translation is certified.
Goa, Daman, Diu and Portuguese registries
Many people born in Goa, Daman or Diu, or descended from people born there, deal with Portuguese civil registries. Their files usually include Indian birth and marriage records, sometimes from Goa's own civil registration system. These records must carry a valid apostille before Portuguese registries will use them.
Older Goan records can have spelling variations, Portuguese-style names and handwritten entries. Check every name against your passport before you start, and ask the registry how it handles differences.

Nationality and civil status files
Portuguese nationality and civil status procedures are paperwork-heavy. Applicants commonly present a full birth record, a marriage certificate if married, and sometimes records for parents or grandparents to show the family line. Each Indian record needs its own apostille.
These files are usually handled through a Portuguese lawyer or a registry, and they set the exact list. Follow it closely and keep copies of everything you send.
Portugal apostille steps from India
- Collect a fresh certified copy from the issuing registrar if the receiving office wants a recent issue date.
- State verification. Civil records go to the state Home or GAD department, or notary and SDM where accepted. Degrees go to the state education department.
- MEA Apostille through an MEA authorised outsourced centre.
- Portuguese translation, certified in the way the receiving office requires.
See the birth certificate apostille page for the state step.
Residence permits and work in Portugal
Portugal draws Indian professionals, entrepreneurs and their families. Residence applications typically ask for a police clearance from India, and family reunification needs marriage and birth certificates. Police clearance certificates carry their own validity rules, so time them close to the application.
Our PCC apostille page explains which police certificates can be apostilled.
Portuguese translation and certification
Portuguese authorities expect documents in Portuguese. A translation is often certified in Portugal by a lawyer, notary or similar professional, or at a Portuguese consulate. Ask the receiving office what it accepts before choosing where to translate.

Degrees and recognition
Universities in Portugal and professional bodies assess foreign degrees through their own recognition procedures. They usually want an apostilled degree and transcript. Recognition for regulated professions, such as medicine or engineering, may involve extra steps and documents.
Ask the university or professional body for its document list before you start. Some want the syllabus or a letter from the Indian university describing the course, in addition to the degree. Those letters are private documents issued by the university, so they may need to go through the education department as well. Getting everything apostilled in one round is quicker than sending a second batch from India after the first is assessed.
Business documents for Portugal
Indian companies setting up a branch, appointing a representative or opening a bank account in Portugal may need apostilled company papers. These include the certificate of incorporation, board resolutions and powers of attorney. These start with a Chamber of Commerce. See commercial documents.
A Portuguese bank or notary will usually want to see who has authority to sign for the company. A board resolution naming the signatory, on letterhead and notarised, avoids a common query. Where the Portuguese side asks for a recent company record, such as a good standing or registration extract, get a fresh copy close to the date of use.
Mistakes on Portuguese files
- Using old certificates when the registry wants recent copies
- Name differences between Goan records and passports
- Translating before the apostille
- Laminated originals that cannot be apostilled
