Russia Apostille for Documents From India
A Russia apostille, issued in India by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), is how an Indian document becomes acceptable to Russian universities, employers and registries. No Russian Embassy stamp follows it. In practice the harder part for Russia is the Russian translation, which offices usually want certified by a notary.

Documents from India for Russia
What do Indian documents need for use in Russia? Both countries are Apostille Convention parties, so the document gets a Russia apostille from MEA after state or chamber verification in India. Russian offices then expect a full Russian translation, usually certified by a Russian notary, covering the document and the Apostille sheet. No embassy legalization is needed on top of the MEA Apostille.
The Russian Translation Is the Real Gatekeeper
Russian offices rarely accept an English document alone. They expect a complete Russian translation, and in most cases the translator's signature is certified by a Russian notary. Translating the Apostille sheet itself is commonly part of this. A translation made in India may be accepted by some bodies, but many prefer it done in Russia.
Ask your university, employer or registry before you order. If they accept an Indian translation, our translation desk prepares Russian versions. If they want a Russian notary, carry the apostilled originals and have it done after arrival.

Indian Students in Russian Medical Universities
Many Indians study medicine in Russia. Universities and later the recognition process often call for apostilled school certificates, such as Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets, and a birth certificate. Each sheet is a separate document and gets its own Apostille.
School certificates are verified by the state education department or the issuing board before MEA. CBSE certificates follow their own verification route. Check that the student's name matches the passport, letter for letter. Russian transliteration will copy whatever spelling the passport shows.
Students who later return to India often need their Russian degree recognised here. That is a separate process and is not covered by the Indian Apostille.
Russia Apostille Route From India
- School and degree papers: state education department or board, or notary and SDM where the state allows.
- Birth certificates, marriage certificates and affidavits: state Home or General Administration department, or SDM.
- Commercial papers: notary where required, then a recognised Chamber of Commerce.
- MEA Apostille through an authorised outsourced centre in New Delhi.
MEA checks the officer's signature only. It does not change names or dates.
Workers and Families
Indian engineers, construction workers and specialists take contracts in Russia. Employers may ask for apostilled degrees and experience letters. Experience letters are private papers and need notarisation before verification. Families joining a worker usually need registrar-issued marriage and birth certificates. Russian offices often care about the date of issue, so ask whether a recent certificate is expected.
Russian migration rules change from time to time, so take the employer's current list as your guide.
Exporters Selling to Russian Buyers
Trade between India and Russia covers pharmaceuticals, tea, rice, seafood, machinery and more. Russian buyers and banks may want an apostilled certificate of incorporation, power of attorney or certificate of origin, with Russian translations. These pass through a Chamber of Commerce before MEA.
Keep company names identical across papers. A Russian translation will make small differences, such as "Pvt Ltd" against "Private Limited", look like two different firms.
Old Certificates and Recent Issue Dates
The Apostille never expires, but Russian offices sometimes expect civil certificates and police clearances to be recently issued. A birth certificate from many years ago may be fine for a university. A police certificate for a residence permit usually needs to be fresh. Ask the receiving body about its age rule, then order new certificates if needed before the Russia apostille is applied.
Plan the order of work as well. Get the Indian paper, verify it, apostille it, and only then translate. A translation made before the Apostille will not cover the sticker, and you would need to pay for a second translation.
What to Send and Mistakes to Avoid
- Original documents, unlaminated
- Passport copy with the exact Latin spelling
- Name of the Russian body and its translation rule
- Letterhead authorisation for company papers
- Mistake: translating only the certificate and not the Apostille page.
- Mistake: mark sheets with a spelling different from the passport.
- Mistake: paying for Russian Embassy legalization, which an apostilled paper does not need.
