Slovakia Apostille: Preparing Indian Papers for Slovak Offices
Slovakia apostille work has a clear pattern: the Apostille itself is simple, and the Slovak translation is where people get stuck. Slovakia is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Apostille is the only legalization needed. Slovak offices then expect an official translation into Slovak.

Documents from India for Slovakia
Do Indian documents for Slovakia need embassy attestation? No. Slovakia accepts the Apostille. The document is verified in India by the state, a notary and SDM, or a Chamber of Commerce, and the MEA then gives the Slovakia apostille. Slovak authorities usually want an official translation by a translator registered with the Slovak Ministry of Justice, which is done in Slovakia.
Plan the Slovak Translation Early
Slovakia uses official translations. These are made by translators listed with the Slovak Ministry of Justice, who attach the translation to the original or a copy and add their seal. A translation done in India usually does not meet this rule. So the normal order is: verify in India, get the Apostille, then send the paper to a Slovak official translator.
Ask the translator whether they need the original or an apostilled copy. That decides what you should apostille in India.
Keep a scan of every apostilled paper before you post it abroad.

Why Indians Go to Slovakia
Slovakia has a large car and engineering industry, and IT and shared service centres in Bratislava and Košice. Indian engineers, technicians and IT staff work there. Students go for medicine and engineering. Temporary residence for work or study usually needs a police clearance certificate, and often proof of qualification.
Each of these groups ends up at a Slovak office that wants the same two things: the Apostille and the official translation.
Slovakia Apostille Steps
- Collect originals. Degree, mark sheets, birth certificate or PCC.
- Get them verified by the state education or home department, or a notary and SDM.
- The MEA adds the Apostille.
- Send the apostilled paper to a Slovak official translator.
A police clearance certificate goes to the MEA directly. See the MEA Apostille guide for details.
Degree Recognition
For some jobs and for further study, Slovakia runs a separate recognition of foreign qualifications. That process looks at what you studied, not only at the stamps. It usually needs the apostilled degree, mark sheets and their official translation. Our degree certificate page explains the Indian side.
Recognition can take time. Apply early if a job or course start date depends on it.
Family Members
A spouse joining a worker in Slovakia needs an apostilled marriage certificate. Children need apostilled birth certificates. Both will then need official Slovak translations.
A registered marriage certificate is easier for Slovak offices to accept than a religious one. If you only have a religious certificate, consider registering the marriage in India first. See our marriage certificate page.
Temporary Residence Applications
Most non-EU nationals who move to Slovakia for work or study apply for temporary residence through the foreign police. The usual papers include a police clearance certificate from India, proof of purpose such as a job contract or university admission, and proof of accommodation. The Indian papers in that list need the Apostille and an official translation.
Timing matters. A police clearance may have to be recent at the date of the appointment, so order it close to the date. Ask your employer or university for the current list, as the rules are updated from time to time.
Company Papers for Slovakia
Indian firms supplying Slovak manufacturers, or opening a branch there, may need an apostilled certificate of incorporation, board resolution or power of attorney. These are notarised, certified by a Chamber of Commerce and then apostilled. See our commercial documents service.
Common Problems
- Paying for a translation in India that Slovakia will not accept.
- Police clearance certificates that are too old by the time of the residence appointment.
- Missing mark sheets when the degree alone was apostilled.
- Different name spellings across documents.
