South Africa Apostille for Indian Documents
A South Africa apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is the only legalization an Indian public document needs for use in South Africa. South African offices work in English, so most Indian papers need no translation. The bigger question for many applicants is how a qualification or civil document will be checked once it arrives.

Documents from India for South Africa
How do I prepare Indian documents for South Africa? Verify the document in India through the state department, a notary and SDM, or a Chamber of Commerce. MEA then adds the South Africa apostille, and nothing more is needed from the High Commission. Papers in English usually need no translation. For jobs and visas, qualifications may also be evaluated by a South African body, which is a separate process.
Apostille and Qualification Evaluation Are Different
South Africa has a national body that evaluates foreign qualifications for work visas and employment. That evaluation decides what your degree is worth in South Africa. The Apostille does something narrower. It confirms that the signature of the Indian officer on your document is genuine.
You may need both, one, or neither, depending on your visa category and employer. Read the visa checklist and the evaluator's instructions. Many evaluators verify directly with the university, while visa or registry offices may ask for an apostilled copy of the degree certificate.

South Africa Apostille Steps in India
- Degrees and diplomas: state education department, or notary and SDM where the state allows.
- Civil papers: state Home or General Administration department, or SDM, for birth and marriage certificates.
- Company papers: notary where needed, then a recognised Chamber of Commerce.
- MEA Apostille through an authorised outsourced centre in New Delhi.
That completes the Indian side. South Africa's High Commission does not add a stamp.
Spouses, Children and Life Partners
Spousal and family visas usually ask for a marriage certificate and children's birth certificates. A registrar's certificate is stronger than a religious or community record. If your marriage was never registered, register it first. Children's birth certificates should show the child's full name and both parents' names as they appear in passports.
Unmarried partners applying on the basis of a life partnership may need affidavits sworn before a notary in India. These can be apostilled after state verification if the South African office asks for it.
Police Clearance Certificates
South African visa applications often ask for police clearance from each country where you have lived for a set period. Indian residents typically obtain a passport office PCC. Ask whether it must carry a South Africa apostille. If it must, MEA can apostille it after issue. Our PCC page explains passport and state police certificates.
Indian Companies in the South African Market
India and South Africa trade in vehicles, pharmaceuticals, rice, chemicals and machinery. Indian firms registering a branch, opening a bank account or bidding for tenders may need apostilled company papers: certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles, board resolution and power of attorney. Exporters may be asked for a certificate of origin or free sale certificate. All of these pass through a Chamber of Commerce before MEA.
Every page must carry the authorised signatory's signature and company stamp. Unsigned copies are the most common reason a chamber returns a set.
When Translation Is Needed
South Africa has several official languages, but English dominates in government paperwork. Indian certificates in English go as they are. A certificate in Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil or another Indian language needs a certified English translation. Our translation team can prepare it.
Planning Your File
Start with the document your visa or employer lists first, usually the degree or marriage certificate. Check that each name matches your passport. Send all papers together so the state and MEA stages run in one batch. Each document gets its own sticker and its own MEA government fee of Rs 50. We give a written quote per document before you courier and update you at each stage, without promising dates on behalf of government offices.
If a document was issued outside India, it cannot get an Indian Apostille. It must be apostilled or legalized in the country that issued it.
