Spain Apostille for Documents Issued in India
A Spain apostille from India's Ministry of External Affairs is how Spanish universities, civil registries, immigration offices and notaries accept Indian documents. Spain first objected to India joining the Apostille Convention, but it withdrew that objection in 2008, and since then the MEA apostille has been valid in Spain without any embassy legalization.

Documents from India for Spain
How do I make an Indian certificate valid in Spain? Have it verified in India by the state department, SDM or a Chamber of Commerce, then get the MEA apostille. After that, Spanish offices usually want a sworn translation into Spanish by a traductor jurado. With the Spain apostille and the sworn translation, the Spanish embassy does not need to legalize anything.
Why Spain was once different
When India joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2005, a few member states lodged objections, and Spain was one of them. While an objection stands, the Convention does not apply between the two countries, so Indian documents for Spain still needed embassy legalization at that time.
Spain withdrew its objection in 2008. Since then, the normal Convention rules apply. Older guides and some agents still mention Spanish embassy legalization. That advice is out of date. Today the MEA apostille is enough on the Indian side.

The sworn translation step
Spanish public bodies generally ask for documents in Spanish. The accepted form is usually a traducción jurada, made by a sworn translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The sworn translator signs and stamps each page, and the translation should cover the apostille too.
Most clients order the sworn translation after the Spain apostille is complete. Many Spanish sworn translators work from clear scans, so you can start while the originals travel. If a document is in Hindi or another Indian language, an English version may be needed first. Ask our translation team about this.
Degree recognition and study in Spain
Indian graduates who want to practise a regulated profession or continue studies in Spain often apply for recognition of their degree, called homologación or equivalencia. The Spanish ministry handling these applications commonly asks for the degree and transcripts with an apostille and a sworn translation.
University admission offices may ask for the same documents. Plan for the degree and the full set of transcripts. Our degree certificate apostille page explains how university papers are verified in each state.
Marriage, birth and residence
Spanish civil registries and immigration offices often want apostilled marriage certificates and birth certificates for family residence, for marriage to a Spanish national, or for registering a child. A police clearance certificate is often needed for residence. Spanish offices tend to treat police certificates as valid only for a few months, so time the request well.
Spain apostille route step by step
- Verification by the issuing state, the SDM in Delhi or a Chamber of Commerce.
- Notarisation for affidavits, declarations and powers of attorney.
- MEA apostille through an authorised centre.
- Return by tracked courier.
- Sworn Spanish translation.
Exporters and companies dealing with Spain
Indian companies selling textiles, chemicals, auto parts, seafood and engineering goods to Spain may need apostilled company papers. Opening a Spanish branch, appointing a distributor or signing before a Spanish notary often requires the certificate of incorporation, a board resolution and a power of attorney. These go through a Chamber of Commerce before MEA. Our commercial documents page explains the chamber step.
Buyers sometimes ask for an apostilled certificate of origin for a particular contract. Keep the exporter's name, address and invoice details identical across every document.
Signing before a Spanish notary
Spain relies heavily on notaries for property purchases, inheritances and company acts. If you are buying property in Spain, accepting an inheritance or authorising someone to act for you, the Spanish notary may ask for Indian documents with an apostille. A common one is a power of attorney signed in India.
For that, the power of attorney is drafted, ideally with the Spanish notary's input, signed before an Indian notary and then apostilled by MEA. A bilingual English and Spanish draft can save a separate translation later. Ask the Spanish notary which form suits the transaction before you sign.
Mistakes we see on Spain files
- Following old advice and booking Spanish embassy legalization.
- Using an ordinary translator when the office wanted a traducción jurada.
- Translating before the apostille, so the apostille is not covered.
- Letting the police certificate get too old.
