Switzerland Apostille for Documents Issued in India
A Switzerland apostille issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi is accepted by Swiss authorities in place of embassy legalization. Switzerland's federal structure means the canton you live in shapes how your paper is handled. Language, civil status registration and timing all depend on the local office.

Documents from India for Switzerland
Is an Apostille enough for Indian documents in Switzerland? For the legalization question, yes. Switzerland and India are Apostille parties, so a Switzerland apostille from MEA completes the Indian side after state or chamber verification. Swiss offices may still check civil documents closely, and they often want a translation into German, French or Italian, depending on the canton.
Your Canton Decides the Language
Zurich, Basel and Bern work mainly in German. Geneva and Lausanne use French. Ticino uses Italian. The civil status office or migration office in your canton will tell you whether it accepts English or wants a translation, and whether the translator must be certified in Switzerland.
Find out before you order. If a translation made in India is accepted, our translation desk can prepare German, French or Italian versions.
Some cantons also ask for the Apostille sheet itself to be translated. Ask whether your translation should cover the whole page, including the MEA sticker.

Registering a Marriage or Birth in Switzerland
When an Indian national marries a Swiss citizen, or a family moves to Switzerland, the civil status office often records foreign events in its register. It usually wants apostilled birth and marriage certificates, sometimes recently issued. Swiss offices can also check foreign civil documents in more depth, and this can take time.
Use registrar-issued certificates that show full names and parents' names exactly as in passports. Fix errors at the registrar before the Switzerland apostille, because MEA does not change content.
Switzerland Apostille Route
- Educational papers: state education department, or notary and SDM.
- Civil papers: state Home or General Administration department, or SDM, including birth certificates.
- Company papers: notary where needed, then a Chamber of Commerce.

Professionals and Researchers
Swiss pharma, banking and tech employers hire Indian specialists, and universities host Indian researchers. Employers or cantonal authorities may want apostilled degrees and experience letters. Experience letters are private papers and need notarisation before verification. Researchers often deal with the university directly, and the university will say whether apostilled copies are needed.
Salary slips, employment contracts and reference letters are often asked for in the original language with a translation. If they are in English and your canton accepts English, no translation is needed. Make sure every letter shows the company seal and the signatory name.
Indian Companies Working With Swiss Partners
Swiss commercial registers, banks and notaries may ask for apostilled company documents when an Indian firm opens a subsidiary, appoints a representative or signs a major contract. Common papers are the certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles, board resolution and power of attorney. They pass through a Chamber of Commerce before MEA. See our commercial documents page.
Students at Swiss Universities
Swiss universities and technical institutes assess Indian degrees during admission. Some ask for certified copies, some for a Switzerland apostille on the degree and transcripts, and some verify directly. Follow the university's instructions. Each document, such as a degree and each mark sheet, receives its own Apostille.
Students later applying for a residence permit at the cantonal migration office may be asked for further papers, such as proof of funds or a birth certificate. Keep originals unlaminated so they can be apostilled when needed.
Dates, Validity and Rechecks
The MEA sticker never expires, but Swiss civil status offices often want birth and marriage certificates issued within a recent period. Order fresh certificates close to your application date. If a Swiss office decides to check a civil document further, it may contact Indian authorities or ask you for supporting papers, such as school records or affidavits. Keep copies of everything you send so you can answer quickly.
Each paper, whether a degree, a mark sheet or a marriage certificate, needs its own sticker and its own Rs 50 MEA fee. We quote each one in writing.
