Uruguay Apostille on Indian Documents for Residency, Work and Trade
A Uruguay apostille is the MEA certificate that lets a public document issued in India be used in Uruguay without any embassy stamp. Before the MEA will place it, the right Indian authority must authenticate the paper: a state department for degrees and civil records, or a Chamber of Commerce for company papers. Residency files in Uruguay are detailed, so a clean Indian document set saves a lot of back and forth.

Documents from India for Uruguay
What do Uruguayan offices expect from an Indian document? They expect an original Indian public document carrying the MEA Apostille, followed by a Spanish translation. A Uruguay apostille is accepted because both countries apply the Hague Convention, so no embassy visit is needed. Translations are usually done or checked by a public translator in Uruguay, so ask the receiving office whether an Indian translation will do.
Residency Files Drive Most Requests
People moving to Uruguay from India usually build a residency file. It commonly asks for a birth certificate, a marriage certificate for a spouse, and a police clearance certificate from the country of origin. Each of these is an Indian public document, so each needs its own Apostille.
A police clearance certificate has a short shelf life in most residency systems. Get it issued close to the date you plan to file, then send it for the Apostille quickly. Our PCC apostille page explains which Indian PCCs can be apostilled and how.

How the Uruguay Apostille Is Done in India
The process has two stages inside India.
- Authentication by the issuing side. Education certificates go to the state education department. Birth and marriage certificates go to the state home or GAD department, or through a notary and SDM where the state uses that path. Company papers go to a recognised Chamber of Commerce.
- Apostille at the MEA. The MEA, through its authorised outsourced centres, checks the signature of the authenticating officer and fixes the sticker.
That is the end of the Indian process. The Uruguayan Embassy in New Delhi has no role for apostilled papers.
Spanish Translation in Uruguay
Uruguay works in Spanish. In practice, offices there often want the translation signed by a public translator registered in Uruguay. If that applies to you, send the apostilled document to Uruguay and have it translated there.
Where an office accepts a translation from India, we can arrange a certified Spanish translation. Either way, translate after the Apostille so the sticker is included.
Company and Trade Papers
Indian firms setting up a branch, appointing an agent or bidding for supply contracts in Uruguay may need apostilled corporate papers. These include the certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles, a board resolution, and a power of attorney. Exporters may need a certificate of origin or a free sale certificate.
These start at a Chamber of Commerce, then go to the MEA. See commercial documents attestation for how signatures and letterheads should look.
Students and Degree Holders
Students joining a Uruguayan university, and professionals seeking recognition of an Indian qualification, need the degree and the transcript apostilled. Each university in India has its own verification arrangement with its state education department. Some states need the university to verify first and send a letter, which adds a step before the state stamp.
Check that the transcript covers every year of study. Reviewers in Uruguay compare course hours and subjects, so a missing semester sheet can hold up recognition. Our degree apostille page lists what each type of university needs.
