Aadhaar Card Apostille and Attestation: How It Works
An Aadhaar card apostille is usually requested as supporting proof of identity or Indian address for a foreign bank, employer or family visa file. Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) under the Aadhaar Act, 2016, as a letter, a PVC card or a digitally signed e-Aadhaar. Since none of these carries an officer's ink signature, the legalization starts with a notarised copy.

Can an e-Aadhaar printout be apostilled? Yes, through a notarised copy. UIDAI says e-Aadhaar is equally valid like the physical Aadhaar, but it is digitally signed, not hand signed. For an Aadhaar card apostille, a notary certifies the printout or card copy, the SDM in Delhi verifies the notary, and MEA adds the apostille. Embassy-route countries need MEA attestation and the embassy instead.
Ask one question before you begin
Does the foreign office really want Aadhaar? For identity abroad, a passport is normally the primary document. Aadhaar is most often requested as an extra: proof of Indian residential address, a link to a bank KYC record, or a second ID for a visa file.
Aadhaar also has limits. The Aadhaar Act says it is not by itself proof of citizenship or domicile. If the office abroad wants proof of nationality, a passport copy or a citizenship-related document is the right paper. Our passport copy page explains that route.
If the checklist says "national ID card", ask whether a passport copy will do. It often will, and it is accepted more widely.

Where a legalized Aadhaar copy turns up
We see Aadhaar requests mostly in four kinds of files.
- Overseas bank and investment KYC, where a foreign institution wants proof of the Indian address on record.
- Family and dependant visas, where a spouse or parent abroad files papers for relatives in India.
- Employment files that ask for every national ID the applicant holds.
- Property, inheritance or court matters abroad involving Indian residents, often with an heirship certificate or affidavit.
In each case Aadhaar is supporting evidence. It sits next to a passport, a birth or marriage certificate, or a bank statement. Plan the whole file at once, so every document carries the same spelling of your name and the same address.
Letter, PVC card or e-Aadhaar: which to use
UIDAI issues Aadhaar in more than one form, and all of them carry the same information.
- Aadhaar letter. The paper letter posted after enrolment.
- PVC card. A plastic card ordered online from UIDAI.
- e-Aadhaar. A password-protected PDF downloaded from the myAadhaar portal or the Aadhaar app. UIDAI describes it as digitally signed and equally valid like the physical copy.
- Masked e-Aadhaar. Shows only the last four digits of the number.
For legalization, a fresh e-Aadhaar printout in colour is usually the cleanest choice. A PVC card cannot take stamps, so only its copy can be used. Ask the receiving office whether it wants the full number visible or accepts a masked version.

The Aadhaar card apostille route, step by step
- Print or copy. Print the e-Aadhaar, or copy both sides of the letter or card.
- Notary in Delhi. The notary certifies the copy as a true copy, after seeing the original or verifying the digital document.
- SDM in Delhi. The SDM office verifies the notary's signature.
- MEA. The CPV Division places the apostille or normal attestation.
MEA does not check your Aadhaar data with UIDAI. It confirms the signature before it in the chain. The receiving office can check the e-Aadhaar digital signature or QR code on its own if it wants to.
Because Aadhaar is a central document, there is no separate state department step. For background on the MEA stage, see our MEA apostille guide.
Protecting your Aadhaar number
A legalized copy will be held by an office abroad. Give it only to organisations that genuinely need the full number.
- Use masked e-Aadhaar where the receiving office accepts it. It hides the first eight digits of the number and still shows your name, photo and address.
- Do not send extra copies to agents or intermediaries who do not need them.
- Keep a record of where each legalized copy went.
We handle client documents in our office and return them by tracked courier. We do not keep extra copies beyond what the process needs.
Which countries need the embassy step
The MEA apostille is final for Apostille countries, including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Turkey. Vietnam joins on 11 September 2026.
For the UAE, an Aadhaar copy needs MEA attestation, UAE Embassy attestation in New Delhi and then MOFA in the UAE. Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq and Jordan also use their embassies. China is on the embassy route. Germany does not legalize Indian documents. Our embassy attestation service handles the embassy step.
Cost and time
Our Delhi route fee for an Aadhaar card apostille is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document. It covers notary, SDM, the Rs 50 MEA fee and our service. Courier is extra. Embassy fees are added for non-Apostille countries.
Expect 2 to 3 working days on the Delhi route once your documents reach us. We quote in writing first.
If you are legalizing several family members' Aadhaar copies, each person's copy is a separate document with its own fee.
Send us these
- Original Aadhaar letter or card, or a fresh colour e-Aadhaar printout.
- Passport copy.
- Destination country and the office asking for it.
- Their checklist, especially on masked or full number.
- Any translation needed. We arrange certified translation.
Delhi NCR clients can drop off at New Ashok Nagar. Others courier documents in. We return by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier, with no home pickup. Contact us with questions.
Issues we see often
- Old Aadhaar letter with an outdated address.
- Name spelling different from the passport.
- Black and white printout where the QR code is unreadable.
- Only the front of the card copied.
- Aadhaar sent where the office needed proof of citizenship.
Update your details through UIDAI before you start. If a name difference remains, an affidavit can explain it in the same batch.
Also check that the address on Aadhaar matches any bank statement you are legalizing for the same file. Foreign compliance teams compare them line by line.

Aadhaar Card apostille FAQs
Is an Aadhaar card apostille accepted as proof of identity abroad?
It depends on the receiving office. Many accept it as supporting ID or address proof alongside a passport. Few accept it alone.
Can the PVC Aadhaar card be stamped?
No. Stamps cannot go on a plastic card. A notarised copy is legalized instead.
Do I need my original Aadhaar letter if I have e-Aadhaar?
No. UIDAI treats e-Aadhaar as equally valid. A fresh colour printout is normally enough to start.
Will MEA contact UIDAI to verify my Aadhaar?
No. MEA confirms only the signature of the officer before it, here the SDM. The receiving office abroad can verify the e-Aadhaar digital signature or QR code itself if it chooses.
Does Aadhaar go through a state department?
No. Aadhaar is issued by a central authority, UIDAI, so the state Home Department step is not used.
Is Aadhaar proof of citizenship for a foreign visa?
No. The Aadhaar Act says it does not by itself confer citizenship or domicile. Use your passport for nationality.
Can I get an Aadhaar card apostille for a child?
Yes, with a parent's involvement. The child's passport copy and a parent's ID help. A birth certificate is often more useful abroad, because it proves both identity and parentage. We can legalize both in one batch.
