Bank Statement Apostille and Balance Certificate Attestation

A bank statement apostille is needed when a consulate, university or residence office abroad asks for proof of funds that it can treat as a verified foreign document. In India the paper is issued by your own bank branch, as an account statement or a balance certificate signed and stamped by a bank officer. INFINITYGRO then takes it through the notary, SDM and MEA steps, plus the embassy where the country requires it.

Quick answer

Do I need to apostille my bank statement for a visa? Only if the office abroad asks for it. Many visa checklists accept a bank-stamped statement as it is. When legalization is requested, the signed statement or balance certificate goes to a Delhi notary, the SDM and then the MEA for bank statement apostille. Gulf and other embassy-route countries need MEA attestation and an embassy stamp instead.

Check whether legalization is actually required

Most people who call us about a bank statement have a visa or admission checklist in hand. Read it closely before paying for stamps. A lot of consulates and universities simply want an original statement with the bank's seal and an officer's signature. They do not ask for an apostille at all.

Legalization is more common in these cases:

  • A residence permit or long-stay visa where the foreign ministry wants all Indian papers legalized.
  • A sponsor's statement used to prove support for a family member.
  • A foreign court, notary or property office asking for proof of funds.
  • An employer or government office in a Gulf country with its own attestation rules.

If the checklist says apostille, attested or legalized, follow the steps below.

Statement or balance certificate: which one to request

A bank statement shows transactions over a period, often the last three or six months. A balance certificate is a short letter confirming the balance on a given date. Visa offices sometimes want both, because one shows how the money arrived and the other shows what is there today.

Ask your branch for the exact period and format named on the checklist. Check that the statement shows the account holder's full name as it appears on the passport, the account number and the branch address. Fixed deposits or savings held in another account may need their own certificate, so list every account you plan to show. For study abroad, an education loan sanction letter may also be needed. Treat it as a separate document if it also has to be legalized.

The bank's signature is the foundation

The whole chain depends on a signature that a notary can see. A plain PDF from net banking has no ink signature and no branch stamp. Take a printout to your branch and ask an officer to sign each page, with name, designation and the branch seal. Some banks issue the statement on their own letterhead. That works well.

Every page should be signed or stamped, and pages should be numbered or stapled together. A statement with loose pages, or only the last page signed, can be questioned later.

Do not highlight figures, cross out entries or write notes on the statement. Any marking can make the notary or the office abroad doubt that the document is unaltered.

Bank statement apostille: the steps after the branch

  1. Notary. A Delhi notary attests the signed statement or balance certificate.
  2. SDM. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Delhi verifies the notary.
  3. MEA. The ministry adds an Apostille for Hague countries or a normal attestation stamp for embassy-route countries.
  4. Embassy. Required only for non-Apostille countries.

This route works for statements from banks anywhere in India. The MEA confirms the authenticating officer's signature. It does not check your balance or the bank's records. See our MEA Apostille guide for details on that stage.

For a company's bank statement used in trade or tenders, the receiving office may expect a commercial route instead. Tell us at the start so we can advise. Business papers often travel with others, such as a balance sheet, and the route for those can differ.

Which countries take the Apostille

The UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most European countries, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Turkey accept the MEA Apostille. Vietnam joins them from 11 September 2026.

The UAE needs MEA attestation, then the UAE Embassy, then UAE MOFA in the UAE. Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq and Jordan need MEA attestation and their own embassy stamp. China follows the embassy route. Germany does not legalize Indian documents and may verify them through its embassy. Our embassy attestation page covers the embassy stage.

Timing the statement

Visa offices often want a recent statement. A statement that was current when you started may look old by the time you file. Plan backwards from your appointment. Get the statement from the branch, start legalization the same week, and keep the Delhi stages to their usual 2 to 3 working days.

If your appointment is moved, you may need a fresh statement and a fresh apostille. The old stamps cannot be moved to a new paper.

A simple way to avoid this is to ask the office abroad how many days old the statement may be on the day you submit. Then count back, allow for courier time to and from Delhi, and request the statement from the branch only when the window fits. If you are close to the limit, tell us when you book, and we will plan the bank statement apostille around your filing date.

What to send and what it costs

  • The bank-signed statement or balance certificate, every page stamped
  • A passport copy of the account holder
  • The visa or admission checklist, if it mentions legalization
  • The destination country

Our all-inclusive Delhi route costs Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, covering notary, SDM, the MEA fee and our service. Courier is extra, and embassy fees apply for non-Apostille countries. A student will often send this with a passport copy and academic documents, such as a degree certificate. We quote for the full set in writing before you send anything. Write to us through the contact page.

Questions

Bank Statement apostille FAQs

Can I get a bank statement apostille on a net-banking PDF?

Not as it is. The notary needs a signature to attest. Print the statement and have your branch sign and stamp each page, or ask the branch to issue it on letterhead.

Does the MEA check my bank balance?

No. The MEA verifies only the signature of the authenticating officer in the chain. The figures remain the bank's responsibility.

Can a joint account statement be used?

Yes, if the foreign office accepts it. The statement is legalized as one document. Some offices also ask for a letter from the other account holder, which is a separate document.

My sponsor's account is in another city. Can I still use your service?

Yes. The sponsor gets the statement signed by their branch and couriers it to us, or you send it. Statements from any state go through the Delhi route.

How long is an apostilled statement valid?

The apostille itself has no expiry. The office abroad decides how recent the statement must be, so check its date rules before you start.

Can I submit the statement at the MEA myself?

No. The MEA does not accept documents from individuals at the counter. Papers reach it only through its authorised outsourced centres, after the notary and SDM stages. We handle that submission for you.

Do I need a translation?

Indian bank statements are usually in English. If the destination wants its own language, we can arrange a certified translation.
