Nikahnama Apostille and Attestation for Spouse Visas and Family Sponsorship
A nikahnama apostille is the usual starting point when a Muslim couple married in India needs to prove the marriage to an embassy, employer or civil registry abroad. The nikahnama is the marriage contract recorded by the Qazi at the nikah, and many families also hold a marriage certificate from the state's marriage registrar. INFINITYGRO can legalize either, and we often advise doing both.

Is a nikahnama accepted abroad as proof of marriage? Often yes, once it is legalized. The nikahnama goes to a Delhi notary, then the SDM, then the MEA for nikahnama apostille if the country is a Hague member. For the UAE, Qatar or Kuwait the MEA attests it and the embassy legalizes it. Some offices insist on a government-registered marriage certificate instead, so check their checklist first.
Nikahnama or registered marriage certificate: what each proves
The nikahnama is a religious and contractual record. It names the bride and groom, their witnesses and the mehr, and it carries the Qazi's signature. It is strong evidence that a nikah took place.
A marriage certificate is a government record from the state's marriage registrar. In 2006, in Seema v. Ashwani Kumar, the Supreme Court said that marriages of all citizens, whatever their religion, should be registered compulsorily, and it asked states to put rules in place. States did this in different ways. Maharashtra, for example, has a law that covers registration of marriages generally. Other states use their own rules or acts.
Foreign visa offices tend to prefer the government certificate, because they can see a public authority behind it. Some also want the nikahnama to understand the marriage terms.

Register the marriage where your state requires it
If you hold only a nikahnama, consider registering the marriage with the local registrar before you start legalization. A spouse visa officer who sees two documents that agree on names, dates and place is more likely to accept the file without questions.
Once you have the registered certificate, it follows the route on our marriage certificate apostille page. You can legalize the nikahnama alongside it. Each document is a separate apostille or attestation, so budget for two.
Make sure the names on the nikahnama, the registration certificate and both passports are spelled the same way. Spelling gaps are the most common reason a Gulf embassy sends a family file back.
The nikahnama apostille process in Delhi
- Check the document. It should carry the Qazi's signature and seal, the parties' signatures and the witnesses. A printed booklet issued by a recognised Qazi office is easier to process than a handwritten sheet.
- Notary. A Delhi notary attests the nikahnama.
- SDM. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Delhi verifies the notary's seal and signature.
- MEA. The ministry issues the Apostille or its normal attestation stamp.
The Delhi route is accepted for personal documents from any state, so a nikahnama from Hyderabad, Lucknow or Kozhikode can come to us directly by courier. If an office asks for the state route, the issuing state's Home or General Administration Department signs before the MEA instead. Our MEA Apostille guide explains the ministry stage.

Gulf countries and other embassy routes
Many of our nikahnama files are for family sponsorship in the Gulf. The route differs by country.
- Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain: these are Apostille members, so the MEA Apostille is the last Indian step.
- UAE: MEA attestation, then the UAE Embassy in New Delhi, then UAE MOFA attestation online in the UAE.
- Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen: MEA attestation followed by the embassy in New Delhi.
The UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Europe and Turkey accept the Apostille. China uses the embassy route. Germany does not legalize Indian documents and may verify them through its embassy. Embassy fees are separate; see UAE embassy attestation charges for that country.
Urdu and Arabic text
Many nikahnamas are printed in Urdu, or in Urdu and English. The MEA authenticates the signature chain and does not need the content in English. The office abroad usually does. A Gulf embassy may want an Arabic translation, and a European consulate may want English or its own language.
We can arrange a certified translation and legalize it with the original. Tell us the destination before we start, so the translation is done into the right language.
Check one more detail on bilingual booklets. The English and Urdu parts should give the same names, dates and mehr. If they differ, a translator will flag it and the foreign office may ask which version is correct. Clearing this with the Qazi office early is easier than explaining it at a visa counter.

Our all-inclusive Delhi route costs Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, covering notary, SDM, the MEA fee and our service. Courier is extra. Embassy fees are extra for non-Apostille countries. The Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days once we have the papers. Delhi NCR clients can drop documents at our New Ashok Nagar office. Others courier them in, and we return them by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.
Related family documents
A family file often needs more than the marriage record. A second marriage may need proof that the first ended, such as a divorce deed. A person marrying abroad may need a singleness certificate before the nikah takes place. Children's birth certificates usually follow the marriage papers for dependant visas. Tell us the full list once and we will quote for all of them together through our contact page.

Nikahnama apostille FAQs
Can the MEA apostille a nikahnama issued by a local Qazi?
Yes, after a Delhi notary and the SDM have authenticated it. The MEA checks the authenticating officer's signature, not the Qazi's authority. Whether the foreign office accepts it is their decision.
Is nikahnama apostille enough for a UK spouse visa?
The UK is an Apostille country, so no embassy stamp is needed. UK visa rules on proof of marriage are set by the UK, so read the official guidance or ask your adviser which documents to submit.
My nikahnama is handwritten. Will it work?
It can be notarised and apostilled if it is legible and signed. Some foreign offices question handwritten copies. Registering the marriage and legalizing the registrar's certificate as well makes the file stronger.
Do I need both nikahnama and marriage certificate attested for the UAE?
Many UAE checklists ask for the attested marriage certificate. Some also ask for the nikahnama. Follow the sponsor's or employer's list. Each document goes through MEA, embassy and MOFA separately.
The names on the nikahnama differ slightly from our passports. What now?
Ask the Qazi office about a corrected copy, or prepare a name affidavit and legalize it with the nikahnama. Fix this before legalization, because stamps cannot be moved to a new copy.
Can we get the nikahnama apostille while living abroad?
Yes. A relative in India can courier the original to our Delhi office, or you can send it from abroad yourself. We do not need either spouse to be present. We return the legalized document by tracked courier to the Indian address you give us.
The Qazi has since retired. Can the document still be legalized?
Yes, if the original carries a readable signature and seal. The notary, SDM and MEA steps do not need the Qazi to sign again. If the foreign office wants fresh confirmation, ask whoever now keeps the Qazi's register whether a certified copy can be issued. The Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days, and embassy stages add their own time.
