10th Certificate Apostille for SSC, SSLC, Matric and High School Documents

A 10th certificate apostille makes your Class 10 board document valid in the 130 countries that follow the Hague Apostille Convention. The document itself comes from the board you studied under: a state board of secondary education, CBSE, CISCE or NIOS. INFINITYGRO handles it from New Delhi for students and workers across India.

Quick answer

Which 10th document should I apostille, the mark sheet or the passing certificate? Ask the university, employer or authority abroad what they want. Many boards issue a separate mark sheet and passing certificate, and each one needs its own stamp. A 10th certificate apostille on one does not cover the other. CBSE has issued a single combined marks statement cum certificate to Class X students since 2019, so for recent CBSE students one document is usually enough.

SSC, SSLC, Matric or High School: one document, many names

Every state calls its Class 10 qualification something different. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh students usually hold an SSC. Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu students hold an SSLC. Older certificates from the north often say Matriculation or High School. CBSE calls it the Secondary School Examination, and CISCE awards the ICSE.

For the Ministry of External Affairs these are all the same kind of document: a school-level qualification signed by a board official. The process does not change with the name. What does change is which state department verifies it on the state route, so we always ask which board issued yours.

Mark sheet or passing certificate: choosing the right paper

Many state boards give a student two papers after the Class 10 exam. The mark sheet lists subjects and marks. The passing certificate confirms the student passed and often records the date of birth.

Foreign offices use them for different things:

  • Universities abroad usually want the mark sheet, because it shows grades.
  • Embassies and civil registries often want the passing certificate as proof of date of birth.
  • Gulf employers and visa checklists sometimes ask for both.

Each paper is a separate apostille with its own fee. Sending both costs more but saves a second round if the checklist is unclear. CBSE students from 2019 onward usually have one combined document.

Why a school certificate is needed abroad

People are often surprised that a foreign office cares about Class 10. There are a few common reasons.

  1. Proof of date of birth. For many Indians born before birth registration was common, the board certificate is the most reliable record of age.
  2. Full academic history. Universities and nursing or medical councils abroad often want every qualification from Class 10 upward.
  3. Work visas. Some Gulf employers ask for school documents for technical and skilled roles.
  4. School admission. Families moving abroad with older children may need them.

State boards, CBSE, CISCE and NIOS

Who signed your certificate decides a few practical details.

  • State boards. Each state has its own secondary education board, such as the Maharashtra State Board, the Karnataka examination board or the Board of Secondary Education in many northern states. On the state route, the education department of that same state does the verification. A Gujarat certificate cannot be verified in Kerala.
  • CBSE. A central board with schools in every state. Its digitally signed records can go through e-Sanad, and paper certificates can take the Delhi route.
  • CISCE. The council that awards the ICSE at Class 10. Its certificates usually take the Delhi route.
  • NIOS. The National Institute of Open Schooling. Its secondary certificates are accepted for apostille in the same way as school board certificates.

Old certificates from boards that have since been renamed or merged can still be apostilled. If the signature cannot be verified, the board may need to issue a fresh copy or a verification letter.

How a 10th certificate apostille is done: three routes

Delhi route

A notary in Delhi signs a copy, the SDM (Delhi) verifies the notary, and the MEA adds the apostille. Most foreign offices accept this for a certificate from any state. It is usually the quickest route, about 2 to 3 working days once we have your document.

State route

The education or HRD department of the state that issued the certificate verifies it, and then the MEA stamps it. Choose this only if the authority abroad asks for state verification.

e-Sanad route

Some boards upload records to a digital repository linked to the MEA's e-Sanad system. CBSE was the first. The application is online and a passport copy is needed.

Apostille or embassy attestation

The UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Turkey accept the MEA apostille. Vietnam joins from 11 September 2026.

The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and several other Arab countries are outside the Convention. There the MEA does a normal attestation and the country's embassy in New Delhi legalizes it. For the UAE the last step is MOFA attestation, done online in the UAE. See our UAE attestation page.

China does not accept Indian apostilles and needs embassy legalization. Germany does not legalize Indian documents. A German authority may ask the German Embassy to verify the certificate instead.

  • The name of the destination country and the purpose
  • The checklist from your university or employer, if you have one

Delhi NCR clients can drop off at our New Ashok Nagar office. Others courier the documents to us, and we return them by Blue Dart or another tracked courier. We do not collect from homes. Our Delhi route charge is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, covering notary, SDM, the Rs 50 MEA fee and service. Embassy fees and courier are extra. Contact us for a written quote.

Small problems that slow down a 10th certificate

  • Lamination. A laminated certificate is hard to stamp. Speak to us before sending one.
  • Name differences. Your passport and certificate spellings should match. If they differ, the foreign office may ask for an affidavit.
  • Torn or faded originals. A duplicate from the board may be needed. CBSE students can apply for duplicates through the board's DADS portal.
  • Wrong route. An apostilled certificate is not accepted in the UAE, and an embassy-attested one is not what the UK asks for.

Documents in a regional language may also need a certified translation.
