Unmarried Certificate Assam: Getting Proof of Single Status for Use Abroad

An unmarried certificate Assam residents need for a foreign wedding is not a single fixed form. Depending on the district, the proof is a letter from a revenue officer, an affidavit sworn before a magistrate or notary, or both. Below we explain how to obtain it in Assam and how INFINITYGRO then legalizes it in Delhi.

Quick answer

Where do I get an unmarried certificate in Assam? The Sewa Setu portal notifies many citizen services, but the Sewa Setu list we checked carries a marriage certificate under the Special Marriage Act, not an unmarried certificate. Most applicants therefore ask the Circle Officer or the Deputy Commissioner's office for a status letter, or swear an affidavit. Once you hold an unmarried certificate Assam officials have signed, the MEA can apostille it.

The situation most Assam applicants are in

A typical enquiry comes from Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat or Silchar. A son or daughter is working in the UK, Australia, the Gulf or Europe and wants to register a marriage there. The registry abroad sends a checklist that asks for a certificate of no impediment, a single status certificate, or an unmarried certificate. Families then discover that no office in the district has a printed form with that name.

That is normal. India has no national register of unmarried people, so each state, and sometimes each district, handles the request in its own way. Our single status certificate guide covers the national picture; this page focuses on Assam.

Unmarried certificate Assam: three practical options

  1. A letter from the revenue administration. Applicants write to the Circle Officer of their revenue circle or to the Deputy Commissioner's office, enclosing an affidavit and ID. Whether a letter is issued, and in what format, depends on the office. Ask before you go.
  2. An affidavit sworn locally. You declare your status before an executive magistrate or notary in Assam. This is quick, but it later needs Assam state authentication before the MEA.
  3. An affidavit prepared in Delhi. INFINITYGRO drafts it, a Delhi notary attests it and it moves straight into the Delhi SDM and MEA chain. This suits applicants who already live outside Assam.

Ask the registry abroad first whether it accepts an affidavit. A small number of countries want an officer's certificate only.

What Sewa Setu does offer

Sewa Setu is Assam's portal for services notified under the state's public services rules. Its published service document lists the marriage certificate under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, issued by the Marriage Officer, who is a Deputy Registrar, Senior Sub-Registrar or Sub-Registrar. The user charge shown is Rs 200, with a 30-day notice period before registration.

This matters if your partner is willing to marry in India instead. A marriage registered in Assam under the Special Marriage Act can later be apostilled for use abroad. See marriage certificate apostille for that path.

Paperwork to keep ready

  • Passport copy, because foreign registries match names to the passport.
  • Aadhaar or voter ID with your Assam address.
  • Birth proof, such as an HSLC admit card or birth certificate.
  • A draft affidavit stating your full name, parents' names, address and marital status.
  • For divorced or widowed applicants, the decree or death certificate.

How the MEA step works

The Ministry of External Affairs only certifies a signature it has on record. It will not stamp a circle office letter or a Guwahati notary's affidavit directly. The paper needs an earlier authentication first: the Delhi SDM after a Delhi notary, or the Assam state authority for papers made in Assam.

After that, the MEA issues an Apostille, with a government fee of Rs 50, for countries in the Hague Convention, or normal attestation, which is free, for countries that legalize through their embassies. More detail is on our MEA Apostille page.

Destination rules

Apostille countries include the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Turkey, with Vietnam added from 11 September 2026. For them the MEA Apostille ends the Indian process.

For the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq and Jordan, the MEA attests and the country's embassy in New Delhi legalizes; the UAE then completes MOFA attestation online. Our embassy attestation service handles that sequence for you. China does not accept Apostilles from India. Germany does not legalize Indian documents and may ask its embassy to verify them.

Plan the dates backwards

Start from the wedding or appointment date abroad and work back. Allow time for the circle office or the affidavit, then courier time to Delhi, then our 2 to 3 working days, then courier to the destination. Add translation time if the registry needs it. Because many registries reject status papers older than a few months, do not get your unmarried certificate Assam office letter too early either. A short, well planned window avoids paying for a second certificate.

Assamese and Bengali documents

Letters from district offices may be in Assamese, Bengali or English. Any of these can be apostilled. A registry in a non-English speaking country will usually ask for a certified translation, which we arrange alongside the legalization so the set reaches you complete.

Working with INFINITYGRO from Assam

You do not need to travel to Delhi. Courier the original letter or affidavit, a passport copy and the registry's checklist to our New Ashok Nagar office. Our Delhi route fee is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, all-inclusive, and the work usually takes 2 to 3 working days after we receive it. Embassy fees are extra and quoted in writing first. Your unmarried certificate Assam papers come back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier. Reach us via the contact page or +91 85955 58517.

Questions

Unmarried Certificate (Assam) apostille FAQs

Is the unmarried certificate Assam offices issue available on Sewa Setu?

We did not find it on the Sewa Setu service list we checked. Look at the current list on the portal, and if it is absent, apply to your circle office or use an affidavit.

Can a Guwahati notary affidavit go straight to the MEA?

No. It first needs authentication by the Assam state authority. Alternatively, we prepare a fresh affidavit in Delhi that follows the Delhi SDM route.

What fee does the circle office charge?

We could not verify an official fee or timeline. Ask the office directly. Our own fee covers only the legalization.

My partner is British. Do we need embassy stamps?

No. The UK is an Apostille country, so the MEA Apostille is enough on the Indian side.

Can my father apply on my behalf?

Some offices allow a family member to submit the request, but the affidavit must be signed by you. Ask the office before relying on this.

Does the Apostille have an expiry date?

No, but registries often want the underlying certificate to be only a few months old.
