Unmarried Certificate Jammu Kashmir: From Tehsil Office to Apostille
Families in Jammu, Srinagar, Anantnag or Baramulla usually need an unmarried certificate Jammu Kashmir authorities will sign when a child is marrying in the Gulf, Europe or North America. The certificate is not a printed form with a fixed number. It is a status letter or a sworn affidavit, and both can be legalized for use abroad.

Birth certificate apostille sample
Who issues an unmarried certificate in J&K? Applicants normally approach the Tehsildar of their tehsil, or the SDM where one is posted, with an application, an affidavit and ID. We could not verify a Union Territory wide online service for it, so confirm the format at your tehsil office. An unmarried certificate Jammu Kashmir officers issue, or a notarised affidavit, then goes to the MEA for apostille or attestation.
When J&K families are asked for it
Three situations account for most requests we see from the Union Territory:
- A nikah or civil marriage in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar, where the court or registry wants proof that the groom or bride is not already married.
- A civil registration in the UK, Turkey or a European country, where the registrar asks for a certificate of no impediment.
- A spouse or family visa, where the consulate checks marital history.
The name on the checklist may differ: single status, bachelorhood, no impediment. The document you prepare in India is the same. Our single status certificate page explains these terms in more depth.

Unmarried certificate Jammu Kashmir: the tehsil office route
The Ministry of External Affairs names the SDM, or a competent court, of the area where you live as the authority for a single status certificate. In J&K, applicants commonly start at the tehsil office, and the Tehsildar or SDM may sign a letter after checking the request.
We did not find an official fee, form number or service timeline that applies across the Union Territory. Offices in Jammu division and Kashmir division may handle the request differently. Ask your tehsil office what they need, and whether a patwari or local enquiry report is part of the process.
What applicants usually bring
- An application stating the purpose and destination country.
- Your affidavit declaring that you are unmarried, divorced or widowed.
- Passport copy and Aadhaar card.
- Domicile certificate or another residence proof for the tehsil.
- Date of birth proof, such as a JKBOSE matriculation certificate.
- Where required, statements from the numberdar, chowkidar or two respectable residents.
Every spelling must match your passport. Kashmiri and Dogri names are often transliterated in several ways, and a mismatch is a common reason for rejection abroad.

Using an affidavit prepared in Delhi
Plenty of registries and embassies accept a sworn affidavit of single status. If yours does, INFINITYGRO can prepare the affidavit in Delhi, have a Delhi notary attest it and take it to the Delhi SDM and the MEA. That keeps the whole chain in one city and avoids a separate J&K authentication.
If the registry insists on a government officer's certificate, the tehsil letter is the safer choice.
The legalization chain
The MEA certifies only a signature it can match. So the paper needs a recognised authentication before it reaches the ministry.
- Delhi route: Delhi notary, then the Delhi SDM, then the MEA. Accepted for most personal documents from any state or Union Territory.
- Home authority route: authentication by the J&K administration, then the MEA. Use it only when the receiving office abroad asks for it.
The MEA then applies an Apostille for Hague countries, at a government fee of Rs 50, or normal attestation, which is free. See MEA Apostille in India.
Gulf countries: Saudi Arabia versus the UAE and Qatar
Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain are now Apostille countries, so the MEA Apostille is enough there. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait are not. For them the MEA gives normal attestation, and the paper then goes to the country's embassy in New Delhi. The UAE adds a final MOFA step online. We cover the embassy part through our embassy attestation service.
Outside the Gulf, the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, Japan, South Korea and Turkey accept the Apostille, and Vietnam joins on 11 September 2026. China does not accept Indian Apostilles. Germany does not legalize Indian documents and may verify them through its embassy instead.
Urdu documents and Arabic translation
Older tehsil formats in Kashmir are sometimes in Urdu. The MEA can still legalize them, but a registry in Europe will need a certified translation, and a Gulf court may want Arabic. INFINITYGRO arranges translation in the required language and keeps it with the original set.
After the wedding abroad
Once the marriage is registered, the couple often needs that record recognised back in India, or in a third country where they will live. A foreign marriage certificate follows the legalization rules of the country that issued it. A marriage registered in India, on the other hand, comes back to the MEA chain described above. Our guide to marriage certificate apostille covers that next step, so keep a scanned copy of your unmarried certificate Jammu Kashmir papers for reference.

Unmarried Certificate (Jammu & Kashmir) apostille FAQs
Is there an online portal for an unmarried certificate Jammu Kashmir residents can use?
We could not verify one that covers the whole Union Territory. Ask your tehsil office whether it accepts the request online or on paper.
Can I get the certificate from Delhi if I was born in J&K?
The certificate itself comes from the office where you live. The affidavit, however, can be prepared in Delhi and legalized through the Delhi route.
My nikah is in Dubai. Is the Apostille enough?
No. The UAE needs MEA attestation followed by UAE Embassy legalization and MOFA attestation.
My certificate is in Urdu. Will the MEA accept it?
Yes, the MEA legalizes it as issued. The country abroad will probably want a certified translation.
How long is the certificate valid?
India sets no expiry, but registries abroad often accept only recent papers, usually issued within a few months.
I am a widow. Can I still use this route?
Yes. The certificate or affidavit should state widowed and not remarried, and the late spouse's death certificate may need legalization as well.
