Unmarried Certificate Maharashtra: Aaple Sarkar, Affidavit and Apostille

Applicants from Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur or Nashik who need an unmarried certificate Maharashtra can stand behind usually have a deadline set by a registry abroad. Two routes are common in the state: a status letter from the revenue administration, or a sworn affidavit. This page explains both and shows how INFINITYGRO then legalizes the result for the destination country.

Quick answer

How do I get an unmarried certificate in Maharashtra? Check the Aaple Sarkar portal for a marital status service in your district; we could not confirm one that is offered state-wide. Otherwise, apply to the Tahsildar with an affidavit, or swear an affidavit of single status before a notary or executive magistrate. An unmarried certificate Maharashtra officers sign, or the affidavit, is then authenticated and apostilled by the MEA.

Two papers that people mix up

A marriage certificate proves that a marriage took place. In Maharashtra it is issued after registration with the local marriage registrar, and the Inspector General of Registration publishes a checklist for it. An unmarried certificate proves the opposite: that no marriage exists. It is what a foreign registry asks for before it lets you marry there.

Searches for one often turn up the other. If you already married in India and need that record abroad, read our marriage certificate apostille page instead.

Checking Aaple Sarkar first

Aaple Sarkar is the Maharashtra government's portal for citizen services under the state's right to services framework. It carries a long list of revenue and other certificates. Service lists differ by department and are updated over time, and we could not verify a dedicated unmarried or marital status certificate offered across the state.

Search the portal for your district and look for terms such as marital status or unmarried. If the service exists, follow the listed document list and fee. If it does not, use one of the routes below rather than paying a third party who promises an online certificate.

Unmarried certificate Maharashtra: the two working routes

Status letter from the Tahsildar

Write to the Tahsildar of your taluka, attach a sworn affidavit and proofs, and ask for a letter confirming your marital status. Some offices issue one after an enquiry by the Talathi. Formats and timelines vary; ask locally.

Affidavit of single status

You declare your status on stamp paper before a notary or an executive magistrate. Many registries in Europe, North America and Australia accept this. INFINITYGRO can also prepare the affidavit in Delhi, which lets it go straight into the Delhi SDM and MEA chain. Our single status certificate guide compares the two versions.

Papers to collect before you start

  • Passport copy, with the exact spelling the registry will use.
  • Aadhaar card and a recent residence proof.
  • SSC certificate or birth certificate for date of birth.
  • Draft affidavit with your name, parents' names, address, passport number and status.
  • If divorced, the family court decree; if widowed, the death certificate.

Registries often reject papers where the father's name or surname is written differently, a frequent issue with Marathi names that include the father's first name in the middle.

Authentication before the MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs verifies only the signature of the authenticating officer. A Pune notary's stamp alone is not enough. Choose one chain:

  1. Delhi route: Delhi notary, then Delhi SDM, then MEA. Foreign offices accept this for applicants from all states.
  2. State route: the Maharashtra government's authentication, then the MEA. Use this if the registry or embassy specifically asks.

The MEA then adds an Apostille, government fee Rs 50, or normal attestation, which is free. Details are on our MEA Apostille page.

Apostille, embassy or neither

Apostille countries: UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Turkey. Vietnam from 11 September 2026.

Embassy countries: UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq and Jordan. After MEA attestation the paper goes to their embassy in New Delhi, and the UAE adds MOFA online. See embassy attestation.

Special cases: China does not accept Indian Apostilles. Germany does not legalize Indian documents and may have them verified by its embassy.

Marathi letters and translation

Taluka offices may issue the letter in Marathi. It can be apostilled as it is. Registries in France, Spain, Italy or Latin America will want a certified translation into their language, and even English-speaking registries sometimes ask for an English version. We arrange translation with the legalization.

If you are already overseas

Many Maharashtra applicants already work in the USA, UK, Gulf or Singapore. The Indian mission there may issue its own declaration, which some registries prefer. If yours wants an Indian document, sign an affidavit abroad and courier it to us, or ask us to prepare one for you to sign. We then finish the Delhi chain without you travelling.

Mistakes that cost applicants weeks

  • Getting the affidavit notarised in Thane or Pune and sending it straight to Delhi, where the MEA cannot accept it without state authentication.
  • Leaving out the passport number, which many European registrars now expect on the document itself.
  • Apostilling a paper meant for Dubai, where embassy attestation was required.
  • Using an old unmarried certificate Maharashtra office letter issued a year earlier for a different purpose.

Send us the registry checklist before you start and we will flag these problems early.

Fees, timing and how to send

Our Delhi route fee is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, all-inclusive, usually completed in 2 to 3 working days after we receive the paper. Embassy fees are extra and quoted in writing. Courier your unmarried certificate Maharashtra papers or affidavit to our New Ashok Nagar office; we return them by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier. Questions

Unmarried Certificate (Maharashtra) apostille FAQs

Can I get an unmarried certificate Maharashtra issues on Aaple Sarkar?

Check your district's service list. We could not verify a state-wide marital status service, so many applicants use the Tahsildar route or an affidavit.

Is an affidavit before an executive magistrate accepted abroad?

Many registries accept a sworn affidavit. It then needs state authentication, or you can use a Delhi affidavit on the Delhi route.

Is this the same as a no availability of marriage certificate?

It serves the same purpose of showing no marriage is on record. Ask the registry which wording it accepts.

What is the fee at the taluka office?

We could not verify an official fee or timeline. Ask the office. Our fee covers the legalization only.

Do I need a fresh certificate if my wedding is postponed?

Possibly. Many registries accept only recent papers, so a delay of several months can mean getting a new one.

Can I collect the papers in Mumbai?

We are in Delhi and return documents by tracked courier to any address in India.
