How do I get my Assam university degree apostilled? For a degree certificate apostille in Assam, the degree is first verified by an authority the MEA accepts. Most graduates use the Delhi route of notary, SDM and MEA. Others go through the Assam Home (Political) Department at Dispur when a foreign body asks for state verification. The MEA then adds its apostille at Rs 50 per document.
Which Assam universities award the degrees we handle
Assam has a wide mix of universities. Gauhati University in Guwahati and Dibrugarh University in upper Assam are the two oldest state universities, and each has a large network of affiliated colleges. Cotton University, Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University and Assam Agricultural University in Jorhat also award degrees.
Tezpur University and Assam University in Silchar are central universities. IIT Guwahati awards its own degrees as an institute of national importance. Medical and nursing degrees in the state come from Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences.
The name and seal of the university matter because the verifying officer checks the signature of the university official. A college that is affiliated to Gauhati University issues mark sheets, but the degree itself carries the university's signature.

Three ways to verify an Assam degree before the MEA
- Delhi route. A notary attests the original, the SDM in Delhi verifies it, and the MEA adds the apostille. This route accepts educational documents from any state.
- Assam state route. The MEA list of designated authorities names the Joint Secretary, Home and Political Department, Dispur. Use this route when the university or employer abroad asks for state verification.
- e-Sanad route. Some universities in India are linked to the MEA e-Sanad portal, where verification and the apostille happen online. Check whether your university is connected before choosing it. You will need a passport copy because your passport number is entered.
Since July 2012 the MEA does not accept documents from individuals at its counter. Submission goes through authorised outsourced centres, which is why most people use an agency.
What you send for a degree certificate apostille in Assam

A provisional certificate is a different document from the final degree. Many foreign universities and employers ask for the final degree, so collect it from your university before you start. If you still have only the provisional certificate, ask the receiving office whether it will accept that.

Problems we often see with Assam degrees
Lamination is the most common issue. The MEA stamp goes on the back of the document, and a laminated degree cannot take it. If your degree is laminated, ask your university about a duplicate before you plan any travel dates.
A third issue is a missing degree. Some graduates of affiliated colleges never collected the final certificate after convocation. Your college can tell you how to apply to the university for it. The university then issues the degree, and only after that can the apostille process begin.
Name mismatches come next. A degree that shows a short form of your name, or a different spelling from your passport, needs an affidavit. Where the apostille works and where it does not
The apostille is accepted in about 130 countries that are party to the Hague Convention. These include the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and most of Europe. India became a party to the Convention on 14 July 2005.
