Marriage Certificate Apostille in Assam: Guwahati, Dispur and Beyond
Marriage certificate apostille in Assam starts with a certificate from the Sub Registrar office, where the Marriage Officer registers marriages applied for through the Sewa Setu portal. Since 2024, Muslim marriages in Assam also have their own compulsory registration law. INFINITYGRO, a private agency in Delhi, takes the certificate through a Delhi notary and SDM or the Home Department at Dispur, then to the MEA.

My marriage was registered in Guwahati after 2024. Will the new Assam law change how the certificate is apostilled? No. The apostille step stays the same. Whether your certificate came from a Sub Registrar under the Special Marriage Act or from a registrar under the 2024 Muslim marriages law, marriage certificate apostille in Assam needs a verified signature first. That comes from a Delhi notary and SDM, or from the Home Department in Dispur. The MEA then adds the apostille.
What changed for Muslim marriages in Assam in 2024
The Assam Legislative Assembly passed the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill on 29 August 2024. The Governor gave assent on 19 October 2024 and it became Assam Act XXXII of 2024. A separate repealing law ended the Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935.
Under the old 1935 law, licensed Kazis registered Muslim marriages. The new Act moves this work to government marriage and divorce registrars, with appeals going to a district registrar and then a registrar general. Registration is compulsory, and the Act sets minimum ages of 18 for the bride and 21 for the groom.
A certificate issued by a Kazi before the change is still an old record. For use abroad it needs a signature that a notary or the state can verify. Send us a scan and we will tell you which route fits.

Registering through Sewa Setu and the Sub Registrar office
For a marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, couples in Assam apply online on the Sewa Setu portal under the service called Application for Marriage Registration. The Sub Registrar office checks the application and puts up the marriage notice. After the notice period, the couple books an appointment and the Marriage Officer registers the marriage and hands over the certificate.
The portal page states that the marriage must take place after 30 days and before 90 days from the date of the notice. The same service lists a separate path for a marriage that has already been solemnised, where both spouses sign the application. Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) has its own listed service on Sewa Setu.
How marriage certificate apostille in Assam works
The MEA in New Delhi issues every Indian apostille. It checks only the signature of the officer who authenticated your certificate, not what the certificate says. So the first job is to get a signature the MEA can verify.
- Send us the original certificate by courier, or drop it at our New Ashok Nagar office if you are in Delhi NCR.
- Delhi route: a notary in Delhi attests it, the SDM (Delhi) verifies the notary, and the file goes to an MEA-authorised outsourced centre.
- State route: the Joint Secretary (Home) or (Political), Home Department, Dispur, authenticates it before MEA.
- MEA puts the apostille sticker on the back of the certificate.
- We return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.
The Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days. The Dispur route depends on the Home Department's own schedule.
Couples from Guwahati and Dispur
Guwahati and Dispur sit in Kamrup Metropolitan district, so couples there deal with the Sub Registrar office for that area. The certificate looks the same as one issued in Dibrugarh, Silchar or Jorhat, and it follows the same apostille route. Dispur is also where the Home Department sits, which makes the state route practical for people who live nearby and can follow up in person. Couples now abroad usually choose the Delhi route so that nobody needs to visit Dispur.
Check these points before you courier the certificate
- Send the original certificate. MEA does not apostille photocopies.
- Do not laminate it. MEA stamps the back, and a laminated sheet cannot take the sticker.
- Match spellings with both passports. If a name differs, an affidavit is usually needed.
- If the certificate has Assamese or Bengali text, ask the receiving office whether it wants a certified translation. We arrange translation in all major languages.
- Keep a scanned copy for yourself before you post it.
When an apostille is not enough
Many Assam families have members working in the Gulf. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait are not Hague members, so a marriage certificate for those countries needs MEA attestation and then embassy legalisation. See our embassy attestation service and the UAE attestation charges. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain accept the apostille.
China and Germany do not accept an Indian apostille. Germany checks Indian documents through its own embassy. For most of Europe, the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia, the apostille is what spouse visa and residence permit offices expect.
Fees and what INFINITYGRO handles
The MEA government fee is Rs 50 per document. Our all-inclusive Delhi route, covering notary, SDM, MEA and our service, costs Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document. Courier is extra. We are a private agency and have no link with the Government of Assam or the MEA. For the bigger picture, read our MEA apostille guide and the all-India marriage certificate page. Assam marriage certificate apostille FAQs
Can a marriage certificate issued by a Kazi before 2024 be apostilled?
Usually yes, if it is the original and carries a signature that can be verified. Send us a clear scan first. We will check whether the Delhi route works or whether the receiving office abroad wants state verification from Dispur.
Is the Sewa Setu printout enough for the apostille?
The MEA needs the certificate signed by the Marriage Officer or registrar, not an application receipt. Keep the acknowledgement for your records and send us the signed certificate.
Do I need to come to Delhi for marriage certificate apostille in Assam?
No. You can courier the original to our Delhi office and we return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier. Delhi NCR clients can also drop it off in person.
Which office in Assam does the state verification?
The MEA list names the Joint Secretary (Home) or (Political), Home Department, Dispur. That route is useful when the office abroad asks for state verification. Its timing depends on the department.
My spouse's name on the certificate is spelled differently from the passport. What now?
Most foreign offices want names to match the passport. An affidavit linking both spellings is the usual fix. Ask us before you send the certificate so the affidavit can be processed with it.
