Which PCC should I get in Tamil Nadu for a visa? Most immigration offices ask for the passport office PCC, which you request on passportindia.gov.in. It is signed by a passport officer and goes straight to the MEA. A Tamil Nadu Police certificate suits some employers. Four passport offices across the state
Tamil Nadu is split among four Regional Passport Offices. RPO Chennai handles nine northern districts: Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. It also serves Puducherry and Karaikal.
RPO Coimbatore serves the western region. RPO Madurai covers the south, with Seva Kendras in Madurai and Tirunelveli. RPO Tiruchirappalli covers the central districts and has a Seva Kendra at Thanjavur as well.
Your address on the application decides the office. You choose a Seva Kendra slot online, and smaller Post Office Passport Seva Kendras in district towns help those far from a city. A PCC apostille in Tamil Nadu is the same process whichever of the four offices signed the certificate.

Police verification from Tamil Nadu Police
Tamil Nadu Police runs an online e-services portal. It lists police verification for self, job, tenant and domestic help. You apply online and the police complete their checks.
This certificate is a state police document. For the apostille it follows the personal document chain. That means notary and SDM in Delhi, or the Public Department in Chennai, before the MEA.
Some verifiers prefer a signed, sealed paper over a portal printout. If the certificate you receive has no wet signature, ask the issuing police station whether a signed copy is available.
A state police verification is not the same as a passport PCC. Read the foreign office's wording before you choose.

Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai applicants
Chennai residents fall under RPO Chennai and can book at Seva Kendras such as Aminjikarai, Saligramam or Tambaram. Many are IT and healthcare workers heading to the UK, Canada or Australia.
Coimbatore has its own Regional Passport Office, which suits applicants from the western districts.
Madurai residents use RPO Madurai. Families in southern districts often work in the Gulf, where attestation replaces the apostille.

Gulf countries and other exceptions
The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait are not part of the Apostille Convention. A PCC for them goes through MEA attestation and embassy legalisation. Our UAE attestation charges page covers the cost. The apostille does work for Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain, along with the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and most of Europe.
China and Germany do not accept the Indian apostille. For Germany, documents are checked through its embassy.
What Tamil Nadu applicants use the PCC for

Each of these bodies sets its own list. Some ask only for the PCC. Others want degree and birth documents apostilled too. Gather the full list first so all documents travel together.
Timing your PCC
Foreign offices usually want a recent PCC. Each one sets its own window, so ask before you apply. If your visa process is slow, a PCC applied too early may lapse.
Plan the apostille right after the PCC arrives. With courier time on both sides, add a few days to the 2 to 3 working days the Delhi route takes.
If the name on the PCC differs from your passport, even by an initial, fix it first. A mismatch can lead to rejection abroad. Tamil names written with an initial in place of a surname cause this often, so compare both documents closely and fix the record before you start.
Already living outside India
If you are abroad, the Indian embassy or consulate there issues your PCC. That document follows the mission's own rules and may not need an Indian apostille. Ask the receiving office.

Is a PCC from the Tirunelveli Seva Kendra accepted for apostille?
Yes. It is issued under RPO Madurai and signed by a passport officer, so it goes straight to the MEA.
Can I apostille a TN Police tenant verification?
A tenant verification is meant for landlords and rarely fits a foreign request. Ask the receiving office which document it needs. If they accept a police certificate, self verification for a visa is usually the closer match.
Will I have to travel for the apostille?
