Marriage Certificate Apostille in Tamil Nadu

Tamil text on the certificate is the first thing to plan for when you arrange a marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu. Under the Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriages Act, 2009 the Sub-Registrar of the Registration Department registers marriages of every religion. The state's authentication office for personal documents is the Public (Foreigners) Department at the Secretariat in Chennai.

Quick answer

My Tamil Nadu marriage certificate is mostly in Tamil. Will the embassy accept it after the apostille? The apostille confirms the signature on the certificate, not the language. Most foreign offices still want a certified English translation of any Tamil text. For a marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu we can arrange the translation alongside the apostille, so both documents reach you together by tracked courier.

Tamil certificates and the translation question

Tamil Nadu Sub-Registrar certificates commonly show Tamil and English. Even when English appears, a foreign registry may want every line in a language it reads. Ask the receiving office before you start. If it wants a translation, the translator's certificate is usually attached to the apostilled original or legalised separately.

We arrange certified translation in all major languages, including French, German, Spanish and Arabic. Names in the translation should follow passport spelling, since a mismatch is the most common reason a foreign office asks questions.

The 2009 Act and the Sub-Registrar

The Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriages Act, 2009 came into force on 24 November 2009. It makes registration compulsory for every marriage, whatever the religion or law under which it was performed. The Inspector General of Registration is the Registrar General of Marriages, District Registrars act at district level, and Sub-Registrars are the Registrars of Marriages.

The application is due within 90 days of the marriage. A 2020 amendment lets couples register at the Sub-Registrar office where either party permanently lives, as well as where the marriage was solemnised. A refusal can be appealed to the District Registrar and then to the Registrar General.

The Act also sets penalties. Failing to register on time, or making a false statement in the application, can be punished on conviction. For couples planning to move abroad, the simplest step is to register soon after the wedding and ask for an extra certified copy at the same visit.

Using TNREGINET for forms and copies

The Registration Department's portal, TNREGINET, covers marriage certificate services along with property registration. The department's notice for the 2009 Act said application forms are free on its website. If your original certificate is worn or laminated, request a fresh certified copy from the Sub-Registrar. MEA cannot stamp the back of a laminated page and does not apostille photocopies.

Two ways to get a marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu

Through Delhi. A Delhi notary attests the certificate and the SDM in Delhi verifies the notary. MEA's CPV Division then issues the apostille. This route is accepted for most personal documents from any state. Our all-inclusive price is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, courier extra, and the MEA fee within it is Rs 50.

Through Chennai. MEA's list names the Under Secretary, Public (Foreigners-III) Department, Secretariat, Chennai, and a Deputy Secretary, Public (Protocol) Department. Use this route when the foreign office asks for state verification. Its timing depends on the department. Read more on MEA apostille.

Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai couples

Couples in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai register at their local Sub-Registrar office, and each city has several such offices across its zones. Since 2020 that can be the office covering the permanent residence of either spouse. The apostille route is the same for all three cities. If you choose state verification, the Secretariat office is in Chennai. For the Delhi route, courier the certificate to us and we return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.

When you need a fresh copy from the Sub-Registrar

Couples who married years ago often find their certificate worn, stapled or laminated. Before you start the apostille on your certificate, look at the page closely. The Sub-Registrar's signature and seal must be clear, and the back must be free for stamps.

If the original is not usable, apply to the same Sub-Registrar office for a certified copy of the entry in the marriage register. That copy carries a fresh signature and can be legalised in the normal way. Keep the old certificate safely at home.

Some couples also hold a marriage certificate from a temple or religious body. That is a useful record, but a foreign office usually wants the government certificate issued under the 2009 Act.

Check the destination first

  • Apostille accepted: most of Europe, the UK, the US, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and other members.
  • Apostille not accepted: China and Germany.
  • Attestation needed instead: UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt and other non-members, through our embassy attestation service.

Married in Puducherry or Kerala? Those certificates come from different authorities. See the Puducherry guide.

Tamil Nadu families often move to Singapore, Malaysia, the UK and the US. Singapore and the UK are Convention members, so an apostille is the normal requirement there. Always confirm with the receiving authority, since a visa office and a local registry abroad can ask for different things.
