PCC Apostille in Punjab for Work, Study and Migration

PCC apostille in Punjab is common because so many residents move abroad for work and study. The MEA lists passport offices at Amritsar and Jalandhar, and a Regional Passport Office at Chandigarh. A passport PCC from any of them goes straight to the MEA, while a Punjab Police certificate needs notary and SDM first.

Quick answer

My PCC is from the Jalandhar passport office. What happens next? Send us the original. Because a passport officer signed it, PCC apostille in Punjab for a passport PCC needs no notary or SDM. We lodge it at the MEA via an authorised outsourced centre. A Punjab Police certificate is different: it needs notary and SDM attestation, or the NRI Affairs Department, before the MEA.

Passport offices that serve Punjab

The MEA's list of Regional Passport Offices shows two offices inside Punjab, at Amritsar and Jalandhar. The Regional Passport Office at Chandigarh is also close to many Punjab districts.

Your address decides which office deals with your file. When you apply on passportindia.gov.in, the system routes you to the right one and books a Passport Seva Kendra appointment. Police verification then happens at your home address through the local police station.

Keep your file number. You will need it to track the PCC and to collect it if the office asks you to come in person.

PCC apostille in Punjab with a passport PCC

Here the work is light. The passport officer's signature is known to the MEA, so no other officer has to confirm it.

  1. Collect the original PCC from the passport office.
  2. Courier it to us, or have a relative drop it at our Delhi office.
  3. We submit it to the MEA through an authorised outsourced centre.
  4. We return it with the apostille by tracked courier.

Background on the MEA process is on this page.

Certificates from Punjab Police

Some employers, colleges and licensing bodies want a clearance from the local police instead. Punjab Police provides verification and character certificate services to residents. Apply for the exact certificate named in your instructions, and keep the application receipt safe.

A police officer signs this kind of certificate. It follows the personal document route. A notary attests it, the SDM in Delhi attests it, and the MEA apostilles it. The alternative is authentication by the Department of NRI Affairs, Punjab, then the MEA.

Do not confuse a gram panchayat or sarpanch character letter with a police certificate. Receiving offices abroad usually want a police-issued document.

Applicants from Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Patiala

Ludhiana and Patiala do not have a passport office of their own in the MEA list, so applicants there are attached to another office. Check your jurisdiction before you apply. Amritsar and Jalandhar residents have offices in their own cities.

Wherever you are in Punjab, the apostille itself happens in Delhi. Courier the original PCC to our office at C-5 A/2, New Ashok Nagar, Delhi 110096. We send it back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier. We do not collect from homes.

Destinations and the kind of PCC they want

Visa and immigration authorities in many countries ask for the passport PCC. Some jobs, nursing registrations and local authorities ask for the local police certificate. Follow the exact words in your instructions.

Canada, the UK, the USA, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and most of Europe accept the apostille. UAE, Qatar and Kuwait do not; for them a PCC needs MEA attestation and embassy legalization. See UAE attestation charges.

Students heading abroad from Punjab

Many young people from Punjab apply for study permits, and some countries ask for a PCC as part of the file. Others ask only at a later stage, such as a work permit after studies. Read the checklist for your exact visa type. Do not assume a friend's requirements match yours, even for the same country.

Students often apply for the PCC in a rush close to their deadline. The longest wait is usually police verification, not the apostille. Start the passport PCC application as soon as you know you need it.

If you are already abroad, you may have to apply for a PCC through the Indian mission in that country instead. A PCC issued by an Indian mission abroad is a different case. Ask us before sending one.

Errors that send a PCC back

The name on the PCC must match the passport. A married applicant who changed surname needs to be careful here. If the PCC and passport differ, an affidavit or a corrected certificate may be needed.

Never send a colour scan or a downloaded copy for apostille. Only the original paper certificate can be stamped. Lamination also stops the stamp, so keep the certificate in a plastic sleeve instead.

Finally, make sure the PCC you have is the one asked for. A passport PCC and a Punjab Police certificate are not interchangeable.

Freshness, checklist and charges

A PCC reflects your record on the day it was issued. Many receiving offices accept it only if it is recent. They choose the period, so ask them, and get the apostille done soon after you receive the certificate. Once the original reaches us, the Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days, plus courier time each way.

  • Original PCC, not a scan or photocopy
  • Passport copy with the same spelling
  • Destination and purpose
  • Any deadline from your employer or college

Our charge is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, including the Rs 50 MEA fee. Courier is extra. Each PCC is a separate apostille.

If your destination needs a translated copy, we arrange certified translation.
