Marriage Certificate Apostille in Punjab for NRI Families
Most requests for a marriage certificate apostille in Punjab come from couples joining a spouse in Canada, the UK, Australia or the USA. The certificate is issued by the Registrar of Marriages for the tehsil under the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2012, and couples usually apply at a Sewa Kendra. After authentication, the MEA adds the apostille.

My wife is in Canada and I am in Ludhiana. What does she need from Punjab for the spousal file? She needs your registered marriage certificate from the tehsil Registrar of Marriages, and often an apostille. A marriage certificate apostille in Punjab can be done by the Delhi route: notary, SDM, then MEA, usually in 2 to 3 working days. You can courier the original to our Delhi office and get it back by tracked courier.
Why so many Punjab couples need an apostille
Punjab has one of the largest overseas communities in India. Spouses often marry in Punjab and then apply to join a partner abroad. Canada, the UK, Australia and the USA all ask for proof of marriage. Their requirements differ by office and by type of application. Some visa offices accept a plain registered certificate. Others, and many courts, banks and registries abroad, ask for an apostilled one. Check the checklist you were given before you start, and follow what that office actually asks for.

The 2012 Act and the Registrar of Marriages
The Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2012 was published as Punjab Act No. 1 of 2013 and amended in 2016. It sets up three levels. A Registrar of Marriages covers a tehsil or sub-tehsil. A District Registrar supervises each district. A Chief Registrar has charge of the whole state.
The couple present a memorandum within three months of the wedding. Between three and six months, it is accepted with reasons and a fee. After six months it needs written permission and an affidavit, and after one year the Chief Registrar must approve it.
Sikh couples can also register under the Anand Marriage Act. The state's Home Affairs department lists both options together.
Getting the certificate from a Sewa Kendra
Marriage registration is one of the services offered at Punjab's Sewa Kendras. District websites point to esewa.punjab.gov.in for booking a slot before visiting. Once the record is approved, you receive the certificate signed by the Registrar.
- Keep the original. MEA does not apostille photocopies.
- Do not laminate it.
- Check that the spellings match both passports. A spelling gap usually needs an affidavit.
Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Patiala
The Doaba belt around Jalandhar and the districts of Ludhiana, Amritsar and Patiala send a steady flow of spouse visa files abroad. A certificate from any of these cities is issued under the same state Act and follows the same apostille route. You do not need to travel to Delhi. Courier the original to our New Ashok Nagar office, and we return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.

Put the following in one envelope and send it by a tracked service. A short note with your phone number helps us reach you quickly.
- The original marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages.
- Clear copies of both spouses' passports, front and back pages.
- The name of the destination country and, if you have it, the embassy or visa checklist.
- An affidavit if any name or date differs from the passports.

How marriage certificate apostille in Punjab is done
- Notary in Delhi checks and stamps the certificate.
- SDM in Delhi attests the notary's signature.
- MEA checks the SDM's signature and fixes the apostille through an authorised outsourced centre.
Some receiving offices ask for verification by the state first. The MEA list names the Deputy Secretary or Under Secretary, NRI Affairs, Chandigarh, for Punjab. That route takes as long as the department needs. Read more on our MEA apostille page.
The MEA fee is Rs 50 per document. Our Delhi route charge is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, all inclusive. Courier is extra.
Punjabi wording and translation
If your certificate has Punjabi text, the foreign office will probably ask for an English translation. Canada and Australia, for example, generally want a certified translation with the original. We arrange certified translation in all major languages.
The apostille itself does not work everywhere. China and Germany do not accept Indian apostilles. UAE, Qatar and Kuwait are not members, so a move to Dubai or Doha needs MEA attestation and then embassy legalisation instead. We handle that process as well. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain accept the apostille. Couples from nearby states can see our Haryana page.
