Marriage Certificate Apostille in Uttarakhand Under the UCC
Uttarakhand is the first state where a marriage certificate apostille in Uttarakhand usually starts with a Uniform Civil Code certificate. Since 27 January 2025, marriages are registered online on the state's UCC portal and approved by a Sub-Registrar. That certificate then goes for authentication and the MEA apostille.

Marriage certificate attestation sample
We registered our marriage on the UCC portal in Dehradun. Is that certificate valid for an apostille? Yes. A certificate issued by a Sub-Registrar through the UCC portal is a public document. For a marriage certificate apostille in Uttarakhand, we take a clean signed print by the Delhi route: notary, SDM, then MEA. That usually takes 2 to 3 working days, at Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document plus courier.
Marriage registration under Uttarakhand's UCC
The Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand, 2024 received assent on 11 March 2024. Its rules came into effect on 27 January 2025, and registration of marriage became compulsory for couples covered by the Code. Scheduled Tribes and certain protected communities are outside its scope. The Code also covers residents of the state who live elsewhere.
Reports on the rules describe three groups. Marriages after the Code began must be registered within 60 days. Marriages from 26 March 2010 until the Code began had six months to register. Older marriages or marriages outside the state may register by choice. A marriage is not invalid only because it was not registered.
In January 2026 the state issued a UCC Amendment Ordinance with procedural and appeal changes.

The UCC portal and Sub-Registrar approval
Applications go through ucc.uk.gov.in or the UCC mobile app. The portal lists a Sub-Registrar and a Designated Officer as the officials for marriage registration. It shows a Standard service of 15 days and a Tatkal service of 3 days. Couples and witnesses can apply from anywhere, which ended the old need to appear at the Sub-Registrar's office.
For marriages on or after 27 January 2025, the portal asks for a wedding photo of the couple and a certificate from the officiant. For older marriages, a couple photo is enough.
If the receiving office wants the certificate apostilled, use the signed certificate or a clean print. MEA does not apostille photocopies.
Already registered before the UCC?
Couples who registered under the older state law or a central Act do not need to register again. Under the UCC rules, they apply for an acknowledgement of the earlier registration. Either the old certificate or the UCC record can be apostilled. If a foreign office has seen both, make sure the names and dates match. A mismatch is a common reason for a file to be returned. If you are unsure which certificate the foreign office wants, send us both and we will advise before starting.
Dehradun and the rest of the state
Dehradun is the state capital and the base of many couples who move abroad for work or study. Since registration moved online, a certificate from Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital or a hill village looks the same and follows the same route. Courier the original to our Delhi office, which is a short trip from Dehradun by road. We send it back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier. If you married in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh or Himachal Pradesh, see those pages.
How marriage certificate apostille in Uttarakhand is done
- A Delhi notary verifies the UCC certificate.
- The Delhi SDM attests the notary's signature.
- The MEA checks that signature and fixes the apostille through an authorised outsourced centre.
If a foreign office asks for state verification, the MEA list names the Deputy Secretary or Under Secretaries of the General Administration Department in Dehradun. That route depends on the department's timing. More detail is on our MEA apostille page.
The MEA fee is Rs 50 per document. Our Delhi route package is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, all inclusive. Courier is extra.
Uttarakhand residents living elsewhere
The UCC applies to residents of Uttarakhand even when they live outside the state. Many families from the hills now live in Delhi NCR, Chandigarh or abroad. If you are one of them, check whether your marriage falls under the Code's registration rules before applying for a visa. The portal asks for a residence proof when you apply as a resident.
Couples in Delhi NCR can drop the finished certificate at our New Ashok Nagar office and collect it there. Couples still in the state, or already abroad with family at home, can have a relative courier the original to us. Only the certificate and passport copies are needed. We confirm receipt by phone or WhatsApp on +91 85955 58517.
Translation and country rules
The UCC portal works in Hindi and English. If your certificate carries Hindi text, the destination country may ask for a certified translation, which we arrange through our translation service.
The apostille is valid across the convention's 130 parties, except where an objection applies. China and Germany do not accept Indian apostilles. UAE, Qatar and Kuwait need embassy attestation instead. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain accept the apostille.
