Marriage Certificate Apostille in Karnataka
A marriage certificate apostille in Karnataka starts with a certificate from the Sub-Registrar office of the Department of Stamps and Registration, which registers Hindu and special marriages across the state. From there the document can go to the Home Department or a Regional Commissioner in Karnataka, or through a Delhi notary and SDM, before MEA adds the apostille.

I registered my marriage at a Sub-Registrar office in Bengaluru. Can I get it apostilled without travelling to Delhi? Yes. For a marriage certificate apostille in Karnataka you can courier the original certificate to our Delhi office. We get it notarised and verified by the SDM in Delhi, then submit it to MEA for the apostille. If the office abroad wants Karnataka's own verification, the certificate goes first to the Home Department (Passport and Foreigners) in Bengaluru or a Regional Commissioner.
Karnataka's two marriage registration laws
Karnataka has its own statute, the Karnataka Marriages (Registration and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1976. It came into force on 25 February 1984 and says every marriage contracted in the state after the appointed day shall be registered. The parties sign a memorandum and send it to the Registrar of Marriages within thirty days. The Act also says a marriage is not invalid only because it was not registered.
Hindu couples usually register under the Registration of Hindu Marriages (Karnataka) Rules, 1966, made under section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act. Inter-faith couples use the Special Marriage Act, 1954. In practice the Sub-Registrar offices of the Department of Stamps and Registration handle both kinds of registration.

| Online system | Kaveri (kaverionline.karnataka.gov.in), with Bapu Seva and Grama One centres |

| State authentication | Under Secretary, Home (Passport and Foreigners), Bengaluru; Regional Commissioners at Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, Belagavi |

Applying through Kaveri and getting a fresh copy
The department runs the Kaveri system for its services, and its district pages list Kaveri Online Services with forms. In February 2024 the state cabinet approved changes to the Hindu marriage registration rules so that couples could apply online. Applications can also be made at Bapu Seva and Grama One centres.
For an apostille, MEA needs an original certificate with a clear signature and seal of the issuing officer. Many couples keep the first certificate at home and order a fresh certified copy for use abroad. That is a good habit. Do not laminate the copy you plan to send, since the back of the page must stay free for stamps.
How marriage certificate apostille in Karnataka works
There are two paths, and the right one depends on what the foreign office asked for.
- Delhi route. A Delhi notary attests the certificate, the SDM in Delhi verifies the notary, and MEA's CPV Division issues the apostille. This is accepted for most personal documents from any state.
- State route. The Karnataka authority listed by MEA verifies the certificate first. MEA then apostilles it.
MEA only checks the signature of the officer who authenticated the document. It does not check the marriage details. Since July 2012 MEA does not accept documents from individuals at its counter, so submission goes through authorised outsourced centres. See our page on MEA apostille in India for the wider process.
Which Karnataka office verifies personal documents
MEA's list of state authorities for Karnataka is longer than for most states. It names the Under Secretary, Home Department (Passport and Foreigners) in Bengaluru, and the Regional Commissioners at Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi and Belagavi. Additional Commissioners in the divisional offices and the Additional Deputy Commissioners for Bengaluru Urban and Rural also appear.
Choose the state route only when the receiving office abroad says it wants state verification. Otherwise the Delhi route is simpler, because one courier trip covers notary, SDM and MEA. Our all-inclusive Delhi route costs Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, with courier extra. The MEA fee inside that is Rs 50 per document.
Couples from Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Kalaburagi
A certificate from a Sub-Registrar office in Bengaluru (Bangalore) follows the same apostille route as one from Mysuru (Mysore), Mangaluru (Mangalore) or Kalaburagi (Gulbarga). If you pick the state route, the Regional Commissioner offices at Mysuru and Kalaburagi are on MEA's list, so couples in those divisions may find the nearest office there. Bengaluru couples usually deal with the Home Department.
For the Delhi route you do not need to visit any office. Courier the original to us and we send it back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier once MEA has stamped it.
Checks before you courier the certificate
- Send the original or a certified copy. MEA does not apostille photocopies.
- Match the spelling of both names with your passports. If they differ, an affidavit is usually needed.
- Ask whether the destination needs an English translation of any Kannada text. We arrange certified translation.
- Keep the document unlaminated.
Countries where the apostille will not work
India joined the Hague Apostille Convention on 14 July 2005, and HCCH counts 130 contracting parties as of 30 June 2026. Still, an apostille is not accepted everywhere. China and Germany do not accept India's apostille. Non-members such as the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt need MEA attestation followed by embassy legalization, which we also handle through our embassy attestation service. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain accept the apostille.

Karnataka marriage certificate apostille FAQs
Is marriage registration compulsory in Karnataka?
The 1976 Karnataka Act requires every marriage contracted in the state after its appointed day to be registered, with the memorandum sent within thirty days. A marriage is not invalid just because registration was missed, but you need a registered certificate for any apostille.
Can a Kaveri-generated certificate be apostilled?
Yes, if it carries the signature and seal of the Sub-Registrar. We review a scan first. If the signature or seal is unclear, we suggest a fresh certified copy from the same office before sending it on.
Which route is faster for a marriage certificate apostille in Karnataka?
The Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days once we receive the original. The state route depends on how long the Karnataka office takes, so we cannot promise a fixed time for it.
My certificate shows my maiden name. Will that cause problems?
MEA does not change names. The foreign office will compare the certificate with your passport. If the names differ, an affidavit linking both names is usually prepared and can be legalised with the certificate.
We married in Bengaluru but now live in the UAE. Is an apostille enough?
No. The UAE is not a member of the Apostille Convention. The certificate needs MEA attestation and then UAE embassy legalization. Our page on UAE attestation charges explains the steps.
Can I get a marriage certificate apostille in Karnataka for a Special Marriage Act certificate?
Yes. A certificate issued by the Marriage Officer under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 is a public document like any other. It follows the same Delhi or state route to MEA as a Hindu marriage certificate from a Sub-Registrar.
