Marriage Certificate Apostille in Delhi
A marriage certificate apostille in Delhi starts with the certificate issued by the Marriage Officer of your Revenue district, usually the SDM, after an application on the Delhi e-District portal. Because our office is in New Ashok Nagar, East Delhi, couples in the city can hand over the document in person. The MEA then adds the apostille that foreign authorities look for.

We registered our marriage at the SDM office in Delhi. How do we get it apostilled for a spouse visa? Bring the original certificate, both passports and a copy of the visa checklist. For a marriage certificate apostille in Delhi, the certificate is notarised, then verified at the SDM level, and then the MEA puts its apostille sticker on it. Our all-inclusive charge is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, and the Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days.
Where a Delhi marriage certificate comes from
Delhi made marriage registration compulsory through the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014. The Revenue Department handles it district by district. Couples apply on the Delhi e-District portal, pick an appointment, and then appear before the Marriage Officer with their witnesses.
The district pages of the Delhi government say the application should be made within 60 days of the marriage ceremony. A late application attracts a penalty. Marriages can also be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or solemnised under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 at the same offices.
The certificate you receive carries the name and signature of the Marriage Officer. That signature is what the authentication chain later builds on.

How marriage certificate apostille in Delhi works
Delhi is unusual because the state route and the Delhi route meet in the same city. The steps are short:
- Notary. A Delhi notary verifies and stamps the certificate.
- SDM verification. The SDM attests the notary's signature. The MEA list of authorities for Delhi names SDMs and District Judges, along with the Deputy Secretary Home (Passport) at the Delhi Secretariat.
- MEA apostille. The certificate goes to an MEA-authorised outsourced centre. The MEA checks only the signature of the authenticating officer and fixes the apostille.
The MEA has not accepted papers from individuals at its own counter since July 2012. That is why couples use an agency or the outsourced centre. Read more on our MEA apostille page.
Using a copy downloaded from e-District
Many Delhi couples now download their certificate from the e-District portal instead of collecting a printed one. Before you send it for apostille, check three things.
- The print is clean and the signature or digital signature block is legible.
- The names match both passports letter for letter. If not, an affidavit is usually needed.
- The document is not laminated. MEA cannot stamp the back of a laminated sheet.
MEA does not apostille photocopies. If you only have a photocopy, ask the SDM office for a fresh certified copy or download the original record again.
Couples in New Delhi and every Delhi district
Delhi has several Revenue districts, including New Delhi, East, North, South and others. Each has its own Marriage Officer, and certificates from all of them follow the same apostille route. You do not need to go back to the office that registered you unless a correction is required.
INFINITYGRO Attestation is at C-5 A/2, New Ashok Nagar, Delhi 110096, close to the Noida border. Couples in Delhi NCR can drop off and collect documents at the office. Couples who have moved away can courier the certificate in, and we send it back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier. We do not offer home pickup.
Countries that take the apostille, and those that do not
India joined the Hague Apostille Convention on 14 July 2005. The convention had 130 contracting parties as of 30 June 2026. An apostille from MEA is valid in all of them except where an objection applies.
- China: India objected to China's accession on 8 September 2023, so an apostille does not work there.
- Germany: Germany objected to India's accession in 2005 and verifies Indian documents through its embassy.
- UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt: these are not members, so they need MEA attestation and then embassy legalisation. See our embassy attestation service and the UAE attestation fees.
Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain accept the apostille.
What couples use the apostilled certificate for
The most common reason is a spouse or dependant visa. Other uses include a residence permit, citizenship, adding a spouse's name on a passport abroad, opening a joint bank account, buying property together, or filing in a foreign family court. If the receiving office needs a translation, we arrange certified translation in all major languages.
