Marriage Certificate Apostille in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh made registration of every marriage compulsory in 2002, so most couples already hold the document they need for a marriage certificate apostille in Andhra Pradesh. Certificates come either from a Marriage Officer, applied for at the village or ward secretariat, or from a Sub-Registrar of the Registration and Stamps Department. Both kinds can be legalised for use abroad.

I got my marriage certificate from the ward secretariat in Visakhapatnam. Is it valid for an apostille, or do I need one from the Sub-Registrar? A certificate issued under the Andhra Pradesh Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2002 and signed by the approving officer can be used. For a marriage certificate apostille in Andhra Pradesh we check the signature and seal on a scan first. If they are clear, we take it through a Delhi notary, the SDM and MEA, usually in 2 to 3 working days.
The 2002 law that made registration compulsory
The Andhra Pradesh Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2002 requires every marriage performed in the state to be registered, including those under personal laws or custom. The bride, the bridegroom and two witnesses from each side sign a memorandum. It is due within 30 days, and a late memorandum can still be filed within a further 60 days on payment of a fee.
The Marriage Officer issues the certificate free of cost, and the Act treats it as conclusive proof of the marriage. A marriage is not invalid only because it was not registered, but for an apostille you need the certificate itself.

Certificates from village and ward secretariats
The state's village and ward secretariat system now handles the Marriage Certificate service under the 2002 Act. Citizens apply at their secretariat. In rural areas the Panchayat Secretary approves the application, and in towns the Municipal Commissioner does. The certificate is then printed at the secretariat.
Hindu couples can also register with a Sub-Registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The Sub-Registrar of the place of marriage or of either spouse's residence is competent. Whichever office issued yours, keep it clean and unlaminated, and make sure the officer's signature and seal can be read.
How marriage certificate apostille in Andhra Pradesh works
MEA's CPV Division issues the apostille after an authorised officer has authenticated the certificate. There are two ways to get there.
- Delhi route. Notary in Delhi, then SDM Delhi, then MEA. This works for most personal documents from any state. Our all-inclusive price is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, courier extra.
- State route. An Andhra Pradesh authority listed by MEA authenticates the certificate, and MEA then apostilles it. Use this only when the foreign office asks for state verification.
MEA checks the authenticating signature, not the marriage details. See MEA apostille in India for the central rules.
Andhra Pradesh's authentication office after bifurcation
Older MEA lists still show Andhra Pradesh's authenticating officers in the General Administration Department at Hyderabad, from before the state was divided in 2014. MEA's updated data adds an office at the Secretariat in Amaravati, listed under the Additional Secretary, YAT and C Department. Contact details on these lists change, so confirm the current office before sending anything by the state route.
If you are not sure, the Delhi route avoids the question entirely. It is accepted for most destinations and needs no visit to any state office.
Couples in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada
In Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada most couples apply through their ward secretariat, where the Municipal Commissioner approves the certificate. Others register with the local Sub-Registrar. The apostille process is the same for both cities and for certificates from anywhere else in the state. Courier the original to our Delhi office and we return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.
Using the certificate in the US and the Gulf
Many families from coastal Andhra have spouses working in the United States, which accepts the apostille. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain also accept it. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait are not members of the Convention, so they need MEA attestation and then embassy legalization through our embassy attestation service. China and Germany do not accept India's apostille.

Older marriages and certificates issued before 2014
Some couples married in the 1990s or early 2000s, before compulsory registration took full effect, and never registered. They should register first with the Marriage Officer or Sub-Registrar, who will tell them what proof of the marriage is needed. Once the certificate is issued, the apostille on your certificate follows the usual route.
Certificates issued in the old undivided state before June 2014 still carry a valid signature. If the issuing office is now in Telangana, the document stays valid, but the state route would go to the Telangana authority. The Delhi route works either way.
Names, Telugu text and translation
- Both names should match your passports. If they do not, an affidavit is usually needed.
- Telugu entries may need a certified translation for the destination country. We arrange translation in all major languages.
- Send the original or a certified copy. MEA does not apostille photocopies.

Andhra Pradesh marriage certificate apostille FAQs
Is the secretariat-issued certificate the same as a Sub-Registrar certificate?
They come from different officers. One is issued by a Marriage Officer under the 2002 state Act, the other by a Sub-Registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act. Both are government certificates and either can be apostilled if the signature is clear.
We missed the 30-day deadline. Can we still register?
The 2002 Act allows a late memorandum within a further 60 days with a fee. For later cases, ask the Marriage Officer or Sub-Registrar what they need before you apply.
Do I have to go to Amaravati for the apostille?
No. The Delhi route needs no visit to any Andhra Pradesh office. Use the state route only when the foreign office specifically wants state verification.
How long does a marriage certificate apostille in Andhra Pradesh take?
The Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days after we receive the original. The state route depends on the department and has no fixed time.
My spouse is in Dubai. Will an apostille work?
