Marriage Certificate Apostille in Nagaland: What Kohima Couples Should Know
Marriage certificate apostille in Nagaland needs care, because many Naga marriages follow customary practice and the paper a couple holds varies. A government certificate, such as one issued under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which Nagaland extended to the state in 2002, is the easiest to apostille. INFINITYGRO, a private Delhi agency, checks your document first and then takes it through notary, SDM and MEA.

We married in a church in Kohima under Naga custom. What paper do we need for an apostille? You need an original certificate signed by an officer whose signature can be verified. A church or village record on its own may not satisfy a visa office. For marriage certificate apostille in Nagaland, couples usually use a certificate from the marriage registrar or Marriage Officer of their district. It then goes through a Delhi notary and SDM, or the Home Department in Kohima, before MEA.
Customary marriages and the paper trail
Nagaland has strong protection for Naga customary law under Article 371A of the Constitution. Many weddings take place in church or under village custom. A Nagaland Registration of Marriage Bill was introduced in 2012, but we could not confirm that it became law. So we treat registration in Nagaland as running under the central Acts.
The Special Marriage Act, 1954 applies in Nagaland through the Special Marriage Act, 1954 (Extension to Nagaland) Act, 2002. That extension has a proviso: for a Scheduled Tribe marriage solemnised under custom in Nagaland, section 21 of the central Act does not apply.
Section 21 of the Special Marriage Act deals with succession to property. The proviso keeps customary inheritance in place for such marriages. It does not stop the couple from getting a certificate.
Couples who want a certificate that a foreign office will accept without questions often choose to register under the Special Marriage Act, or under their personal law where it provides for registration. Ask your district office which officer handles this before the wedding, so the certificate is ready when the visa process starts.

New rules for Sikh Anand Karaj marriages
In January 2026 the Nagaland Gazette published the Nagaland (Anand Marriages) Registration Rules, 2025, under the Anand Marriages Act, 1909. They let Sikh couples who married by Anand Karaj in Nagaland register with a Registrar of Marriages and get a certificate in Form IV. The memorandum is due within 30 days. A late filing needs an extra declaration explaining the delay. Marriages from before the rules began can be registered within one year.
The steps for marriage certificate apostille in Nagaland
MEA verifies only the signature of the officer who authenticated your certificate. It does not judge how the marriage took place. Here is the usual sequence:
- Send us a scan so we can check the certificate is an original signed by an officer.
- Courier the original to our Delhi office, or drop it off if you are in Delhi NCR.
- On the Delhi route, a Delhi notary attests it and the SDM (Delhi) verifies the notary.
- On the state route, the Special Secretary or Secretary (Home), Kohima, authenticates it instead.
- MEA adds the apostille through its authorised outsourced centre.
- We return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.
The Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days. The Kohima route depends on the department.
Couples in Kohima and other districts
Kohima is the capital, and the Home Department that does state verification works there. Ask at the Deputy Commissioner's office of your district which officer registers marriages and issues certificates. A certificate from Dimapur, Mokokchung or Tuensang follows the same apostille path as one from Kohima, as long as it carries a verifiable signature and seal.
Check the certificate before you courier it
- It must be the original. MEA does not apostille photocopies.
- It must not be laminated, because the apostille goes on the back.
- Both names should match the passports. If a clan name or spelling differs, an affidavit is usually needed.
- If any part is in a local language, the office abroad may want a certified translation.
Using the apostilled certificate abroad
Naga families abroad use the certificate for spouse and dependant visas, residence permits and citizenship files. It is also asked for when changing a surname on a passport abroad, opening joint bank accounts or in a family court case. About 130 Hague parties accept the apostille. China and Germany do not accept an Indian apostille. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt need MEA attestation and embassy legalisation.
Fees for the Delhi route
MEA charges Rs 50 per document. INFINITYGRO's all-inclusive Delhi route costs Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, with courier extra. We are a private agency, not a government office. For background, see our MEA apostille guide, the all-India marriage guide, and nearby Manipur.

Nagaland marriage certificate apostille FAQs
Does Nagaland have its own marriage registration Act?
We could not verify one in force. A bill was introduced in 2012, but we found no record that it was passed. Registration runs under the central Acts, such as the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which applies to Nagaland through a 2002 state Act.
Can a church certificate be used for marriage certificate apostille in Nagaland?
It depends on whether the signature can be verified by a notary or the state. Many visa offices want a government certificate. Send us a scan and we will tell you if it can go ahead.
Who verifies Nagaland documents at state level?
The MEA list names the Special Secretary or Secretary (Home), Kohima. Most of our clients use the Delhi notary and SDM route, which MEA accepts for personal documents from any state.
Can Sikh couples in Nagaland register an Anand Karaj marriage?
Yes. The Nagaland (Anand Marriages) Registration Rules, 2025 allow registration with a Registrar of Marriages. The certificate issued can then be apostilled.
Do I have to visit Delhi?
No. Courier the original to C-5 A/2 New Ashok Nagar, Delhi 110096, and we send it back by tracked courier. Message +91 85955 58517 before sending.
My certificate is handwritten. Will MEA accept it?
A handwritten certificate can go ahead if it is an original with a clear signature and seal of the issuing officer. If the writing or names are hard to read, the office abroad may ask for a translation or a fresh certified copy.
