Marriage Certificate Apostille in Maharashtra: Mumbai, Pune and Beyond
Marriage certificate apostille in Maharashtra depends first on which office registered your marriage. Most Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist marriages are registered by the local Registrar of Marriages under the Maharashtra Regulation of Marriage Bureaus and Registration of Marriages Act, 1998, while court marriages go through the Marriage Officer at the sub-registrar office. Whichever certificate you hold, INFINITYGRO in Delhi can take it to the MEA Apostille.

We had a court marriage in Pune under the Special Marriage Act. Can that certificate be apostilled for a US green card file? Yes. A certificate issued by the Marriage Officer under the Special Marriage Act is a public document, and marriage certificate apostille in Maharashtra works the same way for it as for a municipal certificate. We usually take it through a Delhi notary, the SDM and the MEA. If the US side wants Maharashtra state verification, we use the Home Department, Mantralaya route.
Three kinds of Maharashtra marriage certificate
Maharashtra has more than one registering system, and it helps to know which one issued yours.
- Municipal or local body certificate. Issued by the Registrar of Marriages under the 1998 Act. In Mumbai this is the BMC ward office. Most religious marriages of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists fall here.
- Special Marriage Act certificate. Issued by the Marriage Officer, usually at a sub-registrar office of the Registration and Stamps Department. Used for court marriages and many inter-faith marriages.
- Christian, Parsi and Jewish marriages. These are recorded under their own central laws, with records held by the Registrar General of Marriages in Pune.
All three can carry an MEA Apostille. The officer who signed the certificate is what changes.

What the 1998 Act asks of couples
Under the 1998 Act, the husband submits a memorandum of marriage to the Registrar where he or either spouse normally lives. The deadline is 90 days from the wedding. After that, the Act still allows registration within one year with a small penalty, and later with a larger one. Once registered, the Registrar issues a certificate in the prescribed form.
The same law also regulates marriage bureaus. That part does not affect your certificate. If you married decades ago and never registered, you can still register late before starting the apostille process.
Keep the registration receipt or acknowledgement with your papers. If the certificate was issued years ago and has faded or torn, ask the same ward office or local registrar for a certified copy. The signature on that copy is what the notary or Home Department will verify.
Delhi route or Mantralaya: how marriage certificate apostille in Maharashtra is done
The MEA checks only the signature of the authenticating officer, so your certificate needs one verified signature before it reaches the MEA.
On the Delhi route, a Delhi notary attests it, the SDM in Delhi verifies the notary, and the MEA then fixes the Apostille. This usually takes 2 to 3 working days at our end.
On the state route, the Section Officer in the Home Department at Mantralaya, Mumbai authenticates the certificate, and then it goes to the MEA. Timing depends on the department. Pick this only when the receiving office abroad has asked for state verification. More on each stamp is in our MEA apostille explainer.
Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
In Mumbai, religious marriages are registered at the BMC ward office or through the MCGM online portal. Court marriages in Mumbai are handled by Marriage Officers at sub-registrar offices, including the Fort area for the island city and Khar for the suburbs. Pune, Nagpur, Nashik and Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) each have municipal corporation offices that register marriages within their limits, and rural marriages go to the local registrar.
The apostille path does not change with the city. Courier the original to our Delhi office, and we send it back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.
Marathi entries, Urdu nikahnamas and translation
Many municipal certificates in Maharashtra are printed in Marathi, sometimes with English headings. If your certificate has Marathi entries, most countries will ask for a certified translation. A Muslim couple may also hold an Urdu nikahnama. The certificate from the Registrar is the stronger document for use abroad, so apostille that one first.
We arrange certified translation into English or the destination country's language. Check both names against your passports before you send the papers.
Papers to courier to Delhi
- Original marriage certificate, not laminated
- Passport copies of husband and wife
- Destination country and purpose
- Affidavit if a name is spelled differently from the passport
A photocopy, even a notarised one, cannot be apostilled by the MEA. Ask the Registrar for a certified copy if the original is damaged or laminated.
Destinations that need a different process
Mumbai and Pune families often move to Dubai or Doha. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait do not accept Apostille, so the certificate needs MEA attestation followed by embassy legalization. Our embassy attestation page explains the steps. Germany and China do not accept an Indian Apostille either. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain do accept it.
Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia and most of Europe accept the Apostille. If you are unsure which process your destination needs, send us the visa checklist and we will confirm before you courier anything.
