Marriage Certificate Apostille in Mizoram for Church and Civil Weddings

Getting a marriage certificate apostille in Mizoram depends on having the right certificate first: the one issued by the Registrar of Marriages under the Mizoram Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2007. Many Mizo couples also hold a church certificate from the pastor or licensed officer who solemnised the wedding. INFINITYGRO, a private agency in Delhi, helps you send the right paper to the MEA.

Quick answer

Our pastor in Aizawl gave us a marriage certificate. Can we apostille that, or do we need a different one? Most foreign offices expect the government registration certificate, not only the church one. The Mizo Marriage Act, 2014 itself requires every marriage it covers to be registered under the 2007 Act. For marriage certificate apostille in Mizoram, send us the Registrar's certificate. We verify it through a Delhi notary and SDM, or through the Home Department in Aizawl, and then MEA adds the apostille.

Two Mizoram laws, two different papers

Mizoram has two state laws that touch marriage. The Mizo Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act, 2014 applies to people of Mizo tribes. It covers the whole state except the three Autonomous Districts. Under it, a licensed officer of a church, such as a pastor or an authorised elder, solemnises the wedding and gives a certificate.

The Mizoram Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2007 is the registration law. It covers every marriage in the state, across caste, tribe and religion, including customary marriages and remarriages. Section 12 of the 2014 Act says a marriage under it must also be registered under the 2007 Act. So a Mizo couple usually ends up with two papers.

Which certificate should go for apostille

Foreign visa offices want a civil record issued by a government officer. The Registrar's certificate fits that need. The 2007 Act says the Registrar gives it free of charge, under his hand and seal, and that it is conclusive proof of registration.

If you only have the church certificate, register the marriage first. The 2007 Act gives 30 days to file the memorandum but also accepts a late one. A penalty can still apply for wilful delay.

How marriage certificate apostille in Mizoram is done

The MEA in New Delhi issues the apostille. It only checks the signature of the officer who authenticated the document, and it does not take papers from individuals at its counter.

  • Delhi route: a Delhi notary attests the Registrar's certificate, the SDM (Delhi) verifies the notary, and MEA adds the apostille. This usually takes 2 to 3 working days.
  • Aizawl route: the Additional Secretary or Secretary (Home), Aizawl, authenticates it, then MEA. Choose this when the receiving office asks for state verification. Timing depends on the department.

You courier the original to us, and we send it back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier. Our MEA apostille guide has more detail.

Couples registering in Aizawl

Most of our Mizoram enquiries come from couples who married in Aizawl. The Registrar's certificate from Aizawl, Lunglei or Champhai goes through the same apostille steps. Families in the Autonomous Districts fall outside the 2014 Act, but the 2007 registration law still covers their marriages. Since the Home Department sits in Aizawl, local couples can follow up on the state route in person if needed.

Mizo-language records and translation

Registration certificates are usually in English. Some church certificates and older records carry Mizo text. If the destination country's office cannot read part of a document, it will usually ask for a certified translation. We arrange translation in all major languages, including from Mizo into English.

Where an apostilled Mizoram certificate gets used

Couples usually need the apostille when one spouse moves abroad for work or study and the other follows on a dependant visa. The same certificate is used for residence permits, citizenship files and changing a surname on a passport abroad. Banks ask for it for joint accounts, and so do offices that register property in both names. A family court abroad may also want it in a divorce case. Ask the receiving office whether it wants the apostille alone or with a translation, so you only process the certificate once.

What to send us

  • The original Registrar's certificate. MEA does not apostille photocopies.
  • An unlaminated certificate, since the stamp goes on the back.
  • Passport copies of both spouses. Names should match, or an affidavit is needed.
  • The name of the destination country.

Delhi NCR clients can also drop documents at our office in New Ashok Nagar. We do not do home pickups.

Questions

Mizoram marriage certificate apostille FAQs

Is marriage registration compulsory in Mizoram?

Yes. The Mizoram Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2007 requires every marriage in the state to be registered. The Act also says an unregistered marriage is not invalid for that reason alone.

Can a pastor's certificate be used for marriage certificate apostille in Mizoram?

It is safer to use the Registrar's certificate under the 2007 Act. Many foreign offices do not accept a church certificate alone. Register the marriage and send us that certificate.

We married years ago and never registered. Can we still do it?

Yes. The 2007 Act accepts a memorandum filed after 30 days. Contact the Registrar of Marriages for your area to register, then send the certificate for apostille.

Who verifies Mizoram documents at state level?

The MEA list names the Additional Secretary or Secretary (Home), Aizawl. Most of our clients use the Delhi route because it needs no office visit in Mizoram.

Does the 2014 Act apply to non-Mizo couples?

No. It applies to people of Mizo tribes, and to marriages where the husband is Mizo. Other couples marry under their own personal law or the Special Marriage Act, but registration under the 2007 Act still applies.

How long does the whole process take?

On the Delhi route, the notary, SDM and MEA steps usually take 2 to 3 working days after we receive the original. Add courier time both ways. The Aizawl route depends on the Home Department.
