Marriage Certificate Apostille in Chandigarh
A marriage certificate apostille in Chandigarh begins with a certificate from the Marriage Registrar of the UT administration, which has run online compulsory registration since 2018. Chandigarh follows a Haryana law that was extended to the UT in 2009. The apostille itself comes from the MEA in New Delhi.

We are both from Chandigarh and moving to Australia. Our certificate came through the online system. What next? Check the certificate on chdservices.gov.in, then send us the original. For a marriage certificate apostille in Chandigarh, we use the Delhi route: a notary, the SDM and then the MEA apostille, usually within 2 to 3 working days. Australia is a convention member, so the apostille is normally what its offices look for.
Chandigarh uses a law borrowed from Haryana
Chandigarh does not have a marriage registration Act of its own. On 4 November 2009, the Haryana Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2008 was extended to the Union Territory. Since then every marriage solemnised in Chandigarh must be registered with the Registrar of Marriages.
Sikh couples have one more option. The Chandigarh Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2018 made the Tehsildar or Naib Tehsildar the registrar for Anand Karaj marriages, with the Deputy Commissioner as District Registrar and the Secretary Home as Chief Registrar.
Either certificate can be apostilled. What the MEA needs is a verified signature on it.

Online registration and certificate checks
The UT administration started online compulsory marriage registration on 28 March 2018. Couples can apply through the web portal, a mobile app or a walk-in visit to the Marriage Registrar office, and they get an appointment slot. The first certificate under the system was issued on 4 April 2018.
Each certificate can be checked on chdservices.gov.in with its application number and certificate number. Do this check before you send the document for apostille. A certificate that verifies cleanly is less likely to face questions abroad.
MEA does not apostille photocopies. Send the signed original, and do not laminate it.
How marriage certificate apostille in Chandigarh is processed
There are two ways to reach the MEA.
- Delhi route: a Delhi notary, then the Delhi SDM, then the MEA apostille. This works for most personal documents from any state or UT, and it usually takes 2 to 3 working days.
- UT route: the Secretary, Joint Secretary or Under Secretary (Home) of the Chandigarh Administration authenticates the certificate, then the MEA adds the apostille. Use it if a foreign office asks for state-level verification. The time depends on the department.
In both cases the MEA checks only the signature of the authenticating officer. It does not look into the content. Submission goes through an MEA-authorised outsourced centre, because MEA stopped taking papers from individuals at its counter in July 2012. See our MEA apostille page.
Sectors of Chandigarh and the tricity
Chandigarh is a single city, and all its sectors fall under the same Marriage Registrar system. Couples often live across the tricity, though. A certificate from Mohali is a Punjab document and one from Panchkula is a Haryana document. Look at the seal to see which government issued yours. All three follow the same apostille route. You can read our Punjab page or our Haryana page if your certificate came from there. Couriered documents go back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.
Late registration in the UT
Because Chandigarh applies the Haryana Act, the same time limits apply. The memorandum should reach the Registrar within 90 days of the wedding. After that, it is still accepted with a fine, and longer delays need the approval of a senior officer such as the District Registrar or the Chief Registrar. Couples who only discover the need for a certificate during a visa process should allow time for this.
Once the certificate is issued, look at it closely before the apostille. Check the spellings of both names, the date of marriage and the address. A small error is far easier to fix at the Marriage Registrar office than after the apostille has been fixed, because a corrected certificate would need a fresh apostille.
Where the apostille will and will not work
India has been part of the Apostille Convention since 14 July 2005, and the convention had 130 contracting parties as of 30 June 2026. Australia, the UK, the USA and most of Europe accept the apostille. Germany is the main exception in Europe, because it objected to India's accession and verifies documents through its embassy. China also does not accept Indian apostilles.
Couples heading to the UAE, Qatar or Kuwait need MEA attestation and embassy legalisation. See our embassy attestation service.

Can I check my Chandigarh certificate online?

No. Mohali is in Punjab. It still follows the same apostille route, but it is a Punjab document.
