Marriage Certificate Apostille in Madhya Pradesh

Marriage certificate apostille in Madhya Pradesh is simplest when you know which local body issued your certificate. Under the Madhya Pradesh Compulsory Registration of Marriages Rules, 2008, the registrar is normally the same gram panchayat, municipality or municipal corporation office that registers births and deaths. INFINITYGRO, a private Delhi agency, handles the notary, SDM and MEA stages so the certificate can be used abroad.

Quick answer

My marriage was registered by Indore Municipal Corporation through e-Nagarpalika. Which office do I approach for the apostille? You do not need to visit any Bhopal office. For marriage certificate apostille in Madhya Pradesh we usually take your Indore certificate through a Delhi notary, the SDM and then the MEA. If the country you are going to insists on state verification, the state's designated authority in Bhopal authenticates it first. We tell you which applies before you send anything.

The 2008 rules that made registration compulsory

Madhya Pradesh framed its Compulsory Registration of Marriages Rules in 2008 after the Supreme Court's directions in Seema v. Ashwani Kumar. The rules were made under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, and apply to marriages solemnised in the state whatever the religion.

Under Rule 5, the State Government can appoint Registrars of Marriages for each gram panchayat, municipality, municipal corporation or cantonment board. Until it does, the local authority that registers births and deaths acts as the marriage registrar. Couples submit a memorandum within 30 days of the wedding. The registrar must decide within two months, and a refusal can be appealed to the District Judge within 30 days.

The rules record the marriage. They do not change the personal law under which it was solemnised. A Hindu marriage remains under the Hindu Marriage Act, and a Muslim nikah remains under Muslim personal law. What matters for the apostille is the certificate signed by the registrar.

Urban certificates through e-Nagarpalika

Most urban bodies in Madhya Pradesh offer marriage registration online through the e-Nagarpalika portal at mpenagarpalika.gov.in, under the citizen services menu. Municipal corporations such as Ujjain and Satna also list online marriage certificate services. Rural registration goes through the gram panchayat, and many state services can be reached through Lok Seva Kendras and CSC kiosks.

Print the certificate cleanly if it was issued online. If you need an older record, ask the same local body for a certified copy. That copy is what we take for apostille.

Cities such as Indore and Bhopal have many ward offices. If you are not sure which office registered your marriage, check the acknowledgement or receipt from the time of registration. It usually names the zone or ward.

Steps in marriage certificate apostille in Madhya Pradesh

The MEA does not check what the certificate says. It checks the signature of the officer who authenticated it. So the certificate needs one verified signature first.

  1. Delhi route. A Delhi notary attests the certificate, the SDM in Delhi verifies the notary, and the MEA adds the Apostille. This usually takes 2 to 3 working days at our end.
  2. State route. The state's designated authority in Bhopal authenticates the certificate, and the document then goes to the MEA. Timing depends on that office.

The Delhi route suits most personal documents. Read more in our MEA apostille guide.

Registrations in Bhopal, Indore and Gwalior

Bhopal, Indore and Gwalior each have a municipal corporation that registers marriages within city limits, and these bodies use the e-Nagarpalika system. Couples married in surrounding villages register at their gram panchayat. A Special Marriage Act certificate comes from the Marriage Officer of the district.

The apostille process is the same for certificates from any city or village in the state. Courier the original to our Delhi office, and we send it back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.

Hindi entries and name spellings

Madhya Pradesh certificates commonly have Hindi text, sometimes with English fields. For Canada, the USA, the UK and Australia, a certified English translation is usually expected for any Hindi entries. We arrange certified translation in all major languages.

Before sending, compare both names, the father's names and dates with your passports. A missing surname or different spelling is a common reason for a visa query. If needed, prepare an affidavit first.

Some couples hold both a Hindu Marriage Act certificate and a local body certificate. Ask the office abroad which one it wants. Most visa offices prefer the certificate issued by the registrar under the 2008 rules, since it is a government record.

Checklist before couriering

  • Original or certified copy of the marriage certificate, unlaminated
  • Passport copies of husband and wife
  • Destination country and purpose of use
  • Name affidavit if any spelling differs

The MEA does not apostille photocopies. Laminated certificates cannot be stamped on the back.

Countries that do not accept the Apostille

The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt are not Apostille members, so a certificate for those countries needs MEA attestation and embassy legalization. Our embassy attestation service handles this. China and Germany do not accept an Indian Apostille either. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain do.

Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia and most of Europe accept the Apostille. If your destination is not listed here, send us the requirement from the receiving office and we will confirm the process before you courier anything.
