Marriage Certificate Apostille in Sikkim
Sikkim's marriage law has local roots, and that is the first thing to know about a marriage certificate apostille in Sikkim. Couples register with the District Collector's office, where an Additional District Collector or SDM handles the file under the Hindu Marriage (Sikkim) Rules, the 1963 Sikkim marriage rules or the central Acts. INFINITYGRO Attestation, a private agency in Delhi, takes the certificate on to the MEA.

We registered our marriage at the District Collectorate in Gangtok. How do I get it apostilled for a job move to Japan? Japan accepts apostilles. For a marriage certificate apostille in Sikkim, courier the original certificate and both passport copies to us. We take it through a Delhi notary, the SDM (Delhi) and the MEA, usually in 2 to 3 working days. If state verification is asked for, the Home department's Protocol section in Gangtok signs first.
Sikkim's own marriage rules
Sikkim joined India in 1975 with some of its earlier laws still in force. A 1963 notification set out rules for registering and solemnising a form of marriage in Sikkim. Hindu marriages are registered under the Hindu Marriage (Sikkim) Rules. The state legal services authority notes that tribal communities are not governed by the Hindu Marriage Act, so their marriages may be registered under the 1963 rules. Registration of all marriages has been compulsory since 9 August 2007.
For apostille, the law used does not change the route. What matters is a clear, signed certificate.

The District Collector's office
Couples apply at the District Collector's office in their district. In North Sikkim, for example, the Additional District Collector is the dealing officer at the District Administrative Centre in Mangan. The papers usually include birth certificates, proof of residence, photos and a panchayat report. Police verification may follow the application.
Once registered, keep the original unlaminated. The apostille sticker is placed on the back.
Each of Sikkim's districts has its own collectorate. If you married in one district and now live in another, the certificate stays with the office that registered it. Ask that office for any certified copy you need.
Check the certificate for the officer's designation, seal and date before posting it. Missing details are easier to fix at the collectorate than after the document reaches Delhi.
Our procedure for marriage certificate apostille in Sikkim
- Courier the original and passport copies to our Delhi office.
- A Delhi notary attests the certificate.
- The SDM (Delhi) verifies the notary.
- We submit it through an MEA-authorised centre. The MEA stopped taking documents from individuals in July 2012.
- The MEA apostilles it.
- We return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.
The MEA checks only the officer's signature, not the content. The MEA fee is Rs 50 per document. Our all-inclusive charge is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, plus courier.
From Gangtok to Delhi
Gangtok couples register at the East Sikkim district office. Certificates from Gangtok, Namchi, Gyalshing or Mangan follow the same apostille route. You do not need to travel to Delhi. Send the original by courier to our New Ashok Nagar office. We do not offer home pickup.
Home department (Protocol) verification
If the receiving office wants state verification, Sikkim's authority on the MEA list is the Joint Secretaries (Protocol), Home, in Gangtok. Their signature is followed by the MEA apostille. The time depends on the department. Many embassies accept the Delhi route, so confirm before choosing this one.
If you are not sure which route your file needs, send us the receiving office's checklist. We read it and tell you before you courier the original, so the document makes only one trip.
Tribal, Christian and inter-community marriages
Sikkim has several communities with their own customs. Christian marriages may be registered under the Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872. Couples from different faiths often register under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Tribal marriages may fall under the 1963 Sikkim rules.
For the apostille, the MEA treats all of these the same way. It confirms the signature of the authenticating officer, not the law behind the marriage. What a foreign office may want, though, is some sign of which law applied. If the certificate does not state the Act, the receiving office may ask questions. Check this before you apply for a visa, and ask the district office for a corrected certificate if needed.
Names, clan names and spellings
Names on Sikkim certificates sometimes include clan or community names that do not appear the same way in passports. The MEA does not correct this. If the names differ, add a name affidavit.
- Original certificate
- Passport copies of both spouses
- Name affidavit if needed
- Translation if the destination asks for it
We arrange translation in all major languages.
Non-apostille countries
China and Germany do not accept Indian apostilles. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt need MEA attestation and embassy legalization. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain accept the apostille.

Sikkim marriage certificate apostille FAQs
Our marriage was registered under the 1963 Sikkim rules. Can it be apostilled?
Yes. The MEA apostille depends on the authenticating signature, not on which law the marriage was registered under.
Is marriage certificate apostille in Sikkim possible for a certificate from before 2007?
Yes, if you hold an original registered certificate. If it is laminated or damaged, ask the district office for a certified copy.
Do I have to visit the Protocol office in Gangtok?
No. Use that route only if the receiving office asks for state verification. Most files use the Delhi route.
How do I send documents from Sikkim?
Courier them to our Delhi office with passport copies of both spouses. We send them back by tracked courier.
How long does the Delhi route take?
It usually takes 2 to 3 working days after the original reaches us. Courier time from Gangtok is extra, so plan around any visa deadline.
Is INFINITYGRO a government office?
No. We are a private document legalization agency based in New Ashok Nagar, Delhi. We are not linked to the Sikkim government or the MEA. We prepare your papers and submit them through the official channels.
