Marriage Certificate Apostille in Jharkhand Explained
Jharkhand has its own law that makes marriage registration compulsory, and that shapes any marriage certificate apostille in Jharkhand. Under the Jharkhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, the Registrar of Marriages is the birth and death registration officer of the urban local body in towns, and the Panchayat Sevak or a notified officer in villages. INFINITYGRO Attestation, a private Delhi agency, takes these certificates through to the MEA apostille.

Our marriage was registered at Ranchi Municipal Corporation. What do I need to do to use the certificate in Australia? Australia is a Hague member, so you need an apostille from the MEA. For a marriage certificate apostille in Jharkhand, send us the original certificate and passport copies. We take it through a Delhi notary and the SDM, then the MEA, usually in 2 to 3 working days. The state route through the Home department in Ranchi is used only if asked for.
Jharkhand's compulsory registration law
Many states rely on rules made under central Acts. Jharkhand passed its own statute. The Act sets up a Registrar General of Marriages for the state, a Chief Registrar in each district (the Deputy Commissioner), and Registrars of Marriages at the local level.
The Act asks couples to register within one year of the wedding. A late application attracts a small penalty of Rs 5 a day, up to Rs 100. The Registrar issues two copies of the certificate free of cost under hand and seal. The Act also says registration proves the registration itself, not the validity of the marriage under personal law.

Applying and downloading through JharSewa
Jharkhand lists the marriage registration certificate among the services on its JharSewa citizen portal. Couples can apply there and later log in to find the record. Common Service Centres can also help with the download.
A printout from the portal is useful for your records. For apostille, though, send the signed certificate the Registrar issued. The MEA does not apostille photocopies. If your only copy is laminated, ask the Registrar for a fresh certified copy, because the apostille sticker goes on the back.
How marriage certificate apostille in Jharkhand is done
The Ministry of External Affairs issues the apostille after checking the signature of the officer who authenticated the document. It does not check the contents. Individuals cannot hand documents to the MEA directly. They go through MEA-authorised outsourced centres.
- We receive your original by courier.
- A Delhi notary attests it.
- The SDM (Delhi) verifies the notary.
- The MEA apostilles it.
- We send it back by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.

Ranchi and Jamshedpur certificates
In Ranchi and Jamshedpur, the Registrar of Marriages sits within the urban local body that also registers births and deaths. Certificates from either city, or from a village panchayat, follow the same apostille route. You do not need to come to Delhi. Courier the original to our New Ashok Nagar office. We do not offer home pickup.
If a state signature is requested
Some foreign offices want the state government to check the certificate before the MEA. In Jharkhand, that is the Deputy Secretary, Home, in Ranchi. The time depends on the department. Most visa and residence files abroad accept the Delhi route, so confirm with the receiving office before you choose this path.
Why couples from Jharkhand need it
Most of our Jharkhand clients need the apostille for a spouse or dependant visa. Others need it for a residence permit, for citizenship, or to change a wife's surname in her passport while living abroad. Some need it to open a joint bank account or buy property overseas. A few need it for a divorce or family court case in another country.
Each purpose may come with its own checklist. A spouse visa officer may want the certificate and photos of the wedding. A bank may want only the certificate. Tell us the purpose when you send the document, and we will flag anything missing before it goes to the MEA.
Before you post the certificate
- Original certificate with the Registrar's seal
- Passport copies of husband and wife
- Name affidavit if any spelling differs from the passport
- Translation if the destination needs it
Certificates with Hindi text may need a certified translation for some countries. We arrange translation in all major languages.
Wedding photos and invitation cards are not part of the apostille. Some visa officers ask for them separately, so keep them ready with your visa papers.
If the certificate shows the Registrar's name but no designation, ask the office to add it with a seal. A clear designation helps the notary and the SDM check the document quickly. It also avoids questions later from the receiving office abroad.
Where the apostille will and will not work
Apostilled certificates are accepted in Hague member countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain. They are not accepted in China or Germany. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt are not members, so they need MEA attestation and embassy legalization.

Jharkhand marriage certificate apostille FAQs
We married in 2012, before the Jharkhand Act. Can we still get an apostille?
Yes, if you hold a registered marriage certificate from a competent registrar. The apostille route does not depend on the year of the law. Send us a scan and we will check the signature and seal.
Is a JharSewa printout enough for marriage certificate apostille in Jharkhand?
Send the signed certificate issued by the Registrar. A plain printout or photocopy is not apostilled by the MEA.
Can my parents in Jamshedpur send the certificate for me?
Yes. Anyone can courier the original with both passport copies. We return it by tracked courier to the address you give.
Does the MEA confirm my marriage is valid?
No. It confirms only the authenticating officer's signature.
Our certificate came from a Panchayat Sevak. Is that accepted?
Yes. The Jharkhand Act names Panchayat Sevaks as Registrars of Marriages in rural areas. Their signed and sealed certificate can go through the same apostille route.
Do I need Germany-specific legalization?
Germany does not accept Indian apostilles. It verifies Indian documents through its embassy. Ask us about the documents to prepare.
