Marriage certificate apostille in Chhattisgarh is often requested by couples whose certificate came from a gram panchayat or a municipal corporation under the Chhattisgarh Compulsory Registration of Marriages Rules, 2006. Marriage certificate attestation sample
Our marriage was registered at the gram panchayat in our village near Raipur. Will a panchayat certificate be accepted for an apostille? Yes. A certificate signed by the gram panchayat registrar is a public document. For marriage certificate apostille in Chhattisgarh we usually use the Delhi route: a Delhi notary, then the SDM, then the MEA. If the authority abroad asks for state verification, the Home (Passport) or General Administration Department in Raipur authenticates it first.
Panchayat and municipal certificates in Chhattisgarh
Chhattisgarh adopted its Compulsory Registration of Marriages Rules in 2006, soon after the Supreme Court asked every state to register marriages. In rural areas the gram panchayat registers marriages that took place within its own area. In towns, the municipal body does the same.
District websites, such as Surajpur's, list what applicants need. This includes age proof, residence proof, photographs, a wedding photograph, the invitation card or a priest's certificate, and affidavits on the date and place of marriage. A divorce order or a death certificate is needed for a previous marriage. The registration fee is payable after one month.
The rules record the marriage. They do not change the personal law under which it was solemnised. A Hindu, Muslim or Christian marriage stays under its own law. A court marriage under the Special Marriage Act needs at least 30 days of residence in the state, and its certificate comes from the Marriage Officer.

Applying online through e-District
Couples can apply at the panchayat, at a CSC centre, or online through the state's e-District portal at edistrict.cgstate.gov.in. District collectorates also run Lok Seva Kendras that accept applications. Some municipal corporations, including Durg, Bhilai, Rajnandgaon and Jagdalpur, offer marriage certificates fully online.
Whichever channel you used, the document we need is the certificate issued and signed by the registrar. If you only have an acknowledgement receipt, wait for the final certificate before starting the apostille.
District websites note that a reply normally comes within about 15 days of the application. That is the registration step. The apostille process starts only once you hold the signed certificate.
Raipur couples and the state route
Couples in Raipur city register through the municipal corporation, while those in nearby villages go to their gram panchayat. Certificates from any district in the state follow the same apostille path, and you do not need to travel to Delhi.
For state verification, the Under or Deputy Secretaries in the Home (Passport) Department and the General Administration Department in Raipur authenticate documents before they go to the MEA. The time taken depends on the department. Courier the original to our Delhi office, and we return it by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier.
Many couples from Bhilai, Durg and Bilaspur also send certificates to us. The process for them is no different from Raipur. If one of you lives abroad, a relative in Chhattisgarh can collect the certificate and courier it.
How marriage certificate apostille in Chhattisgarh is completed
The MEA checks only the authenticating officer's signature. The certificate therefore needs one verified signature before it reaches the MEA.
- A Delhi notary attests the certificate.
- The SDM in Delhi verifies the notary's signature.
- The MEA places the Apostille.
This Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days after we receive the document. Use the Raipur state route only if the receiving office abroad asks for it. Our MEA apostille guide explains each stage.
Hindi certificates going abroad
Panchayat certificates in Chhattisgarh are often handwritten or printed in Hindi. Visa officers in English-speaking countries will usually want a certified English translation, and European countries may ask for their own language. We arrange certified translation for all major languages.
Check that names and dates match your passports exactly. A handwritten panchayat entry may spell a name differently. If so, an affidavit may be needed before the apostille.
If the panchayat issued a handwritten certificate, make sure the seal and signature are clear and the paper is not torn. A damaged certificate can cause trouble at the notary or MEA stage. In that case, ask the panchayat for a fresh certificate first.
What goes in the envelope
- Original marriage certificate from the panchayat or municipal registrar
- Passport copies of both spouses
- Destination country and purpose
- Affidavit if spellings differ
Do not laminate the certificate. The MEA cannot stamp the back of a laminated document, and it does not apostille photocopies.
Gulf and other non-Apostille countries
For the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait or Egypt, an Apostille is not accepted. The certificate needs MEA attestation and then embassy legalization. See our embassy attestation service. Germany and China do not accept an Indian Apostille. Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain accept it.
Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia and most of Europe accept the Apostille. If you are unsure, send us the document checklist from the receiving office and we will confirm the process first.
