Marriage Certificate Apostille in Manipur, Step by Step
Marriage certificate apostille in Manipur works on a certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages under the Manipur Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act. That Act covers every marriage in the state, whatever the religion or custom. INFINITYGRO, a private agency in Delhi, gets the certificate verified and apostilled by the MEA and couriers it back to you.

I live in Imphal and my wife is joining me in Canada. How do I get our marriage certificate apostilled? Courier the original certificate from the Registrar of Marriages to our Delhi office. For marriage certificate apostille in Manipur, we usually take the Delhi route: a Delhi notary, then the SDM (Delhi), then MEA. That normally takes 2 to 3 working days. If Canada asks for state verification, the Home Department or GAD in Imphal verifies it first.
Manipur's own registration law
Manipur passed the Manipur Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act in 2008. It received the President's assent on 18 October 2013 and became Manipur Act No. 11 of 2013. The Act applies to every marriage contracted in the state. That includes marriages under custom and remarriages, with no exception for caste, religion or creed.
The State Government appoints Registrars of Marriages for notified areas. A Registrar General of Marriages sits above them and receives the duplicate memoranda and periodic returns. The Act also says a marriage is not invalid only because it was not registered.

Three months to file, then a free certificate
The couple signs a memorandum and gives it to the Registrar of the area where the marriage took place. The Act sets a limit of three months from the wedding date. A late filing is still possible: the Registrar can send a notice asking the couple to appear and file.
Once the entry is made, the Registrar issues a Certificate of Registration under his hand and seal. The Act says this is free. That signed certificate is the document we work on. A handwritten church or community record is a different paper, and many foreign offices will not take it on its own.
How marriage certificate apostille in Manipur is done
Every Indian apostille comes from the MEA in New Delhi. MEA does not take papers from individuals at its counter. It works through authorised outsourced centres and checks only the signature of the authenticating officer.
Delhi route
A notary in Delhi attests the certificate. The SDM (Delhi) verifies that notary. MEA then adds the apostille. This route is accepted for most personal documents from any state and usually takes 2 to 3 working days.
Imphal route
The Additional or Under Secretary (Home), or the Under Secretary GAD, in Imphal authenticates the certificate before MEA. Use this only when the office abroad asks for state verification. Its time depends on the department.
Imphal and the hill districts
Most of our Manipur clients have certificates from Imphal East or Imphal West. Certificates from Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Thoubal or Senapati follow the same path. What matters is the Registrar's signature and seal, not the district. If travel inside the state is difficult, the Delhi route means the certificate only has to reach a courier counter.
Translation and name spellings
Registration certificates in Manipur are generally in English. A destination country with another official language, such as France or Spain, may still ask for a certified translation. We arrange translation in all major languages.
Spellings of clan names and surnames often differ between a certificate and a passport. Foreign offices usually want them to match. An affidavit explaining the difference is the common fix. Tell us about any mismatch when you first contact us.
Check the dates too. The certificate shows the date of marriage and the date of registration. Some visa forms ask for both, and a gap of months or years between them is normal for late filings. Write the dates exactly as the certificate shows them so the forms and the document agree.
Before posting your certificate
- Send the original. MEA does not apostille photocopies.
- Keep it unlaminated so the back can be stamped.
- Include passport copies of both spouses.
- Tell us the destination country.
We return the document by Blue Dart or a similar tracked courier. There is no home pickup. Delhi NCR clients can drop papers at our New Ashok Nagar office.
What it costs and where it is valid
The MEA fee is Rs 50 per document. Our all-inclusive Delhi route costs Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, and courier is extra. INFINITYGRO is a private agency, not a government office.
Apostilles are accepted by about 130 Hague Convention parties, including Canada, the USA, the UK and Australia. China and Germany do not accept an Indian apostille. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt need embassy attestation instead. More background is on our marriage certificate guide. Neighbouring pages cover Nagaland and Mizoram.

Manipur marriage certificate apostille FAQs
Is marriage registration compulsory in Manipur?
Yes. The Manipur Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2008 requires registration of every marriage in the state. It also says an unregistered marriage is not invalid for that reason alone.
We married more than three months ago. Is it too late?
No. The Act lets the Registrar accept a late memorandum after issuing a notice to the couple. Once registered, you get the certificate and can start the apostille.
Can a church marriage record be used for marriage certificate apostille in Manipur?
Foreign offices usually want the government Certificate of Registration. A church record alone may not be accepted. Register the marriage with the Registrar of Marriages and use that certificate.
Which Manipur office verifies documents for MEA?
The MEA list names the Additional or Under Secretary (Home) and the Under Secretary GAD in Imphal. Most clients use the Delhi notary and SDM route instead.
Does Germany accept my apostilled Manipur certificate?
No. Germany objected to India's accession, so it verifies Indian documents through its embassy. Ask us about that process before you apply.
Can my family in Imphal send the certificate if I am abroad?
Yes. Anyone can courier the original to our Delhi office on your behalf. Share passport copies of both spouses and the destination country with us on WhatsApp. We send the apostilled certificate to whichever address in India you give us.
