Birth Certificate Apostille in Maharashtra, From Ward Office to MEA
For a birth certificate apostille in Maharashtra, the starting point is the registrar who recorded the birth, such as the Medical Officer of Health in a Mumbai ward or the registrar of a municipal council or gram panchayat. INFINITYGRO takes that original through attestation and the MEA apostille. Clients across the state courier it to our Delhi office.

Who issues birth certificates in Maharashtra cities? In Mumbai, the ward's Medical Officer of Health acts as registrar of births. Other cities use their municipal corporation's registrar, and villages use the gram panchayat. Any of these originals can go for birth certificate apostille in Maharashtra after notary and SDM attestation in Delhi, or attestation by the Home Department in Mumbai on the state route.
Who Records a Birth in Maharashtra
Each local body has its own registrar under the 1969 Act. In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's ward manuals name the Medical Officer of Health as the registrar or sub-registrar for that ward. Pune, Nagpur, Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) run registration through their corporations. Councils and gram panchayats cover smaller towns and villages.
The certificate you hold must come from the unit where the birth happened. If you were born in a Pune hospital but grew up in Satara, the Pune record is the one that counts.
Hospitals report births to the local registrar, but the hospital's own discharge note is not a birth certificate. Only the registrar's certificate can go for apostille.

Delayed Registration After March 2025
On 12 March 2025, the state announced stricter rules for late birth and death registration, according to All India Radio News. Police verification became mandatory before such certificates are issued, and applications without valid proof can lead to criminal charges. The Public Health Department issued the decision.
For you, this means a late-registered certificate may take longer to obtain. Get it first, then start the apostille. MEA does not check the registration story, only the authenticating officer's signature.
Birth Certificate Apostille in Maharashtra: Choosing a Route
The Delhi route covers most cases. A notary attests the original, an SDM in Delhi countersigns, and the MEA places the apostille. INFINITYGRO charges Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document for this, all inclusive, with courier extra, and it usually takes 2 to 3 working days.
The state route sends the document to the Home Department in Mumbai, the MEA's listed authority for personal documents from Maharashtra, and then to the MEA. Use it only when a foreign office asks for state attestation by name.

Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik and Aurangabad
Mumbai. Certificates come from the ward offices of the BMC. Older ones may be handwritten.
Pune. The corporation's registration department issues them, and Pimpri Chinchwad has its own.
Nagpur. The municipal corporation records city births. Nearby villages use panchayat registrars.
Nashik and Aurangabad. Both corporations register births inside city limits.
From any of these cities, courier the original and a passport copy to our New Ashok Nagar office. We do not collect from homes. Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan clients follow the same steps. We send the finished document back by Blue Dart or a comparable tracked courier.
Marathi Certificates and Translation
Many Maharashtra certificates are bilingual, but some are fully in Marathi, especially older or rural ones. A receiving office abroad will usually want a certified English translation, or a translation into its own language. We arrange this in all major languages. Ask the receiving office whether the translation also needs an apostille.
See translation services for details.
If the receiving office asks for a translation, keep the translation and the apostilled original together. Many offices will want to see both at the same time.
Condition and Name Checks
- Original only. MEA does not apostille photocopies.
- No lamination, since the reverse must take a stamp.
- Child's name present. A name can be added free within 12 months of registration, and with a fee up to 15 years.
- Parents' names spelt as in their passports, or an affidavit ready.
If a receiving office rejects an old handwritten copy, request a computerised extract from the same registrar.
Where Families Use It
A child's passport or visa, admission to a school abroad, a residence permit, a citizenship by descent claim and OCI-related use abroad are the usual reasons. Countries like the UAE and Qatar need embassy legalization instead of an apostille, which we handle through our embassy attestation service.
If the destination is Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia or most of Europe, the apostille is generally enough. Germany and China are exceptions. Germany verifies Indian documents through its embassy, and China does not accept the Indian apostille.
Fees, Time and Tracking for Birth Certificate Apostille in Maharashtra
The MEA charges Rs 50 per document. Our Delhi route fee of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document includes the notary, SDM, MEA fee and our service, with courier extra. The Delhi route usually finishes in 2 to 3 working days once we have the original.
Each certificate is a separate apostille, so a family with two children pays for two documents. We message you when the packet reaches us, when it goes to the MEA and when it is dispatched back. You get the courier tracking number the same day it ships.

Maharashtra birth certificate apostille FAQs
Can a BMC ward certificate go on the Delhi route?
Yes. The Delhi route is accepted for personal documents from any state, including Mumbai ward certificates.
My certificate has no name. What now?
Apply to the registrar who issued it to add the name, then send us the updated certificate.
Is the apostille valid in Germany?
No. Germany verifies Indian documents through its embassy, and China does not accept the Indian apostille either.
Do you need the parents' passports?
