Birth Certificate Apostille in Chandigarh Made Simple
Birth certificate apostille in Chandigarh starts with a certificate from the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, whose Medical Officer of Health handles birth records for the city. As a Union Territory, Chandigarh has its own Home department for state-level authentication. We take the certificate from there to the MEA, working from our Delhi office.

Where Chandigarh keeps birth records
Chandigarh is a Union Territory, and its births are registered under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. Within the city, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh keeps the records through its health wing. The Medical Office of Health issues certificates once the applicant's details match the register.
Government hospitals in the city send birth data online. The corporation also told private hospitals to report births the same way.
Chandigarh began computerising records in 1996. Older entries going back to 1953 were being digitised, according to a 2015 newspaper report on the corporation's online plans. If your birth was registered before 1996, ask for a computerised copy.

Spelling and detail mismatches
When Chandigarh tested online certificates, officials found mothers' names spelt one way in hospital papers and another way in school records. Birth times were sometimes wrong too.
These small errors matter for apostille. A foreign consulate places the child's passport next to the birth certificate. If a parent's name differs, the file may be returned.
Correct the record with the corporation before you send it to us. If correction is not possible in time, an affidavit explaining the difference often helps. We can advise on the wording.
A certificate without the child's name is seldom accepted abroad. Get the name added first.
Birth certificate apostille in Chandigarh: the two routes
Delhi route
- Notary attestation.
- SDM attestation in Delhi.
- MEA apostille through an authorised outsourced centre.
Most Chandigarh clients choose this route. Our all-inclusive fee is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, courier extra. Once we hold the original, it usually takes 2 to 3 working days.
UT Home route
The Secretary, Joint Secretary or Under Secretary in the Chandigarh Home department authenticates the certificate before the MEA. Use it when your receiving office asks for state or UT authentication. Read about the MEA apostille.
For families living in Chandigarh
Chandigarh residents from every sector, Manimajra and the surrounding villages can courier their certificate to our office at C-5 A/2, New Ashok Nagar, Delhi. Many families also have relatives in Delhi who can drop it off and pick it up for them.
We return the apostilled certificate by Blue Dart or another tracked courier. There is no home pickup.
If your child was born in Mohali or Panchkula, the certificate comes from Punjab or Haryana, not Chandigarh. The apostille process is the same, but the state route authority is different. See our Haryana page for Panchkula births.
How families use the apostilled certificate
Chandigarh families most often need it for a child's passport or visa, school admission overseas, or a parent's residence permit file. Others need it for citizenship by descent or OCI-related use abroad.
The UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and most of Europe accept the apostille. China and Germany do not. UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt need MEA attestation plus embassy legalization. We handle that through our embassy attestation service.
The 2023 change to birth certificates
The RBD (Amendment) Act, 2023 came into force on 1 October 2023. It makes the digital birth certificate a single document for proving date of birth. New registrations are linked to the national Civil Registration System run by the Registrar General of India.
For older certificates the effect is indirect. Receiving offices increasingly expect a computerised certificate. The MEA can still apostille an older one when the signing officer is verifiable, but a fresh copy avoids questions.
When a birth was never registered
Some older residents find that no birth entry exists. This happens most with births at home decades ago. The law requires registration within 21 days, but it also allows delayed registration with the proper permission and an affidavit.
Start with the corporation's birth and death office. Ask them to search the register for the year of birth. If they find nothing, they will tell you what the delayed registration process needs.
Only after an entry exists can a certificate be issued and apostilled. Keep any early proof you have, such as hospital papers, school records or a vaccination card. These help the office confirm the date and place of birth.
What goes in your packet
- The original birth certificate
- A passport copy of the child or parent
- Destination country and the asking office
- Your phone number and return address
Photocopies cannot be apostilled. Laminated certificates cannot be stamped on the back. If the receiving office needs a translation, we arrange certified translation in all major languages.
Two copies of the same certificate need two apostilles and two MEA fees. Tell us how many you need when you send the packet, and we will confirm the total before filing.
