Birth Certificate Apostille in Mizoram for Families Abroad
In Mizoram, the Economics and Statistics Department runs birth registration, with local registrars, the Additional Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths in Aizawl and Assistant District Registrars handling different stages. A birth certificate apostille in Mizoram needs that certificate verified first, then the MEA apostille. We manage the whole chain from Delhi.

Birth certificate apostille sample
Can a birth certificate issued by a village registrar in Mizoram be apostilled? Yes, if it is the original registered certificate with the registrar's signature and seal. For a birth certificate apostille in Mizoram, the certificate is verified through the Delhi notary and SDM, or by the Home Department in Aizawl, and then the MEA attaches the apostille. Each certificate needs its own apostille.
Mizoram's registration system at a glance
District websites run by the state show a clear ladder. Local Registrars of Births and Deaths register a birth reported within 21 days, and also between 22 and 30 days with a late fee. From 31 days up to a year, the Additional Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths in Aizawl, or an Assistant District Registrar outside Aizawl district, handles it. After a year, an order from a Judicial Magistrate is needed.
Village-level registration units exist across districts, alongside hospitals and health centres. The Economics and Statistics Department and its District Research Officers also issue non-availability certificates when no record exists.
Late fees in Mizoram rise with the delay. District pages list Rs 10 for 22 to 30 days, Rs 100 for 31 to 365 days and Rs 1,000 beyond a year. A certificate issued after 21 days also carries a fee. These amounts come from the district notices, so check them with your registration unit.

Child's name, missing records and old certificates
A newborn's name can be reported free within 12 months of birth. After that a late fee applies. Get the name entered before you apply for an apostille, because many foreign offices reject a certificate without it.
If no record exists, you will need registration through the late process, and a non-availability certificate may be part of that. For older handwritten certificates, ask the registration unit whether a fresh computerised copy can be issued. Some receiving offices abroad prefer it.
Check the parents' names too. They should match their passports. If a parent's name is spelt differently, the registrar may be able to correct the record, or an affidavit can link the spellings.
Process for birth certificate apostille in Mizoram
- Courier the original certificate and a passport copy to our Delhi office.
- We verify it on the Delhi route, with a notary and the SDM, or on the state route through the Home Department in Aizawl.
- We file it with the MEA through an authorised outsourced centre.
- The MEA confirms the verifying officer's signature and attaches the apostille.
- The certificate returns to you by tracked courier.
The Delhi route usually takes 2 to 3 working days once we have the document. Our all-inclusive charge is Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, with courier extra. See our MEA apostille guide for background.
The state route through Aizawl takes longer because the file has to go to the department and come back. Choose it only if your receiving office specifically asks for state verification.
Mizo text and translation
Some Mizoram certificates and forms carry Mizo wording. A foreign office in a non-English-speaking country may ask for a certified translation of the whole certificate. We can arrange translation in all major languages so it travels with the apostilled original.
The translator works from the original certificate, and the translation is usually certified separately. Tell us the destination country early. Some offices want the translation done by a translator they recognise, while others accept any certified translation.
Spellings of Mizo names can vary between documents. Compare the certificate with the passport letter by letter. If anything differs, an affidavit linking the two spellings will be needed before the apostille.
Families in Aizawl
Aizawl is home to the Additional Chief Registrar's office and to the Home Department used for state verification. Most of our Mizoram clients live in or around the capital.
We do not offer pickup in Aizawl. Send the original by a tracked courier to our New Ashok Nagar office in Delhi. We return it through Blue Dart or another reputed courier. Clients from Lunglei, Serchhip, Lawngtlai and other districts use the same courier process.
Pack the certificate flat and avoid folding it across the seal. Add a note with your phone number and the destination country, so we can confirm the route on the day it arrives.
Countries and common reasons
Families most often need the apostille for a child's passport or visa, school admission abroad, residence permits, citizenship by descent or OCI-related use abroad. Hague countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and Saudi Arabia accept it.
China and Germany do not. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt need embassy legalization, which our embassy attestation service covers.
The MEA checks only the officer's signature. Make sure names match the passport, or prepare an affidavit.
Each purpose may come with its own checklist. Share that list with us before you send the document, so we can confirm the route and any translation needs.
How to begin
Share a photo of your certificate on WhatsApp at +91 85955 58517 or through our contact page. We will check the seal, the name field and the format before you post it. The birth certificate apostille hub has more on the national process.
The amended national Act, in force since 1 October 2023, makes the digital birth certificate a single proof of date of birth. Even so, the apostille needs a signed certificate. Ask your registration unit for a signed copy if you only hold a download.
